One of the biggest reasons for John's challenging behaviors is communication breakdowns. I do my best to provide him with what he needs to communicate with, but it's not always effective and his communication isn't always functional. I have to admit, this one took a lot out of me. I hesitated to post this because it shows a vulnerable moment of our lives. But I decided to because not only does it raise awareness but it can also help other parents and caregivers to feel not so alone. John has limited functional communication. When he has something he needs to express and is unable to, he resorts to using nonverbal communication and in times like this it's not functional.
