Harry Caray was in the Wrigley Field booth to give a detailed description of Jim Leyland’s in-dugout smoking technique as the Pirates skipper sucked down a heater during the 9th inning of the season finale in 1996. The 8-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs capped off Leyland's 11-year tenure as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Between 1986 and 1996, Leyland went 851-863 as the skipper of the Pirates. The future Hall of Fame manager led Pittsburgh to three postseason appearances, capturing the NL East in 1990, 1991, and 1992, while taking home the NL Manager of the Year award following the 1990 season. 👉 Do you have a favorite Jim Leyland story or memory? When discussing all-time greats, Rickey Henderson's name is often unfairly left out of the conversation. Henderson impacted the game in a less traditional way than typical home run hitters such as Mays, Aaron, Mantle, and Griffey Jr., but his overall numbers are just as impressive. The ultimate combination of power, speed, and athleticism, Henderson holds the Major League record for career stolen bases, stolen bases in a single season, runs scored, unintentional walks, and leadoff home runs. The 10x All-Star, 1990 AL MVP, and 2x World Series winner finished his career with 3055 hits, 510 doubles, 297 home runs, 1406 stolen bases, and a .279 average. Henderson played with grit and all-out hustle. He once said: "If my uniform doesn't get dirty, I haven't done anything in the baseball game." The passion that Henderson brought to the ballpark is what makes him one of my all-time favorite players. 👉 What is your favorite Rickey Henderson story or memory? ⚾⚾⚾ #MLB #baseball #baseballlife #baseballlove #baseballislife #baseballseason #baseballgame #baseballcards #baseballhistory #vintagebaseball #homerun #chicagocubs #losangelesdodgers #sandiegopadres #yankees #angels #redsox #sfgiants #dodgers #stlcards #atlantabraves #astros #phillies #nyyankees #braves #mets #80sbaseball #90sbaseball #timwakefield #pittsburghpirates
After going five-for-five against the Philadelphia Phillies in April, Tony Gwynn continued to hit at a torrid pace throughout the summer of 1994. On August 11th, when the season was abruptly put on hold because of the Major League Baseball strike. Gwynn was attempting to become the first player to eclipse the .400 mark since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Gwynn, who batted above .300 for 19 straight seasons between 1983 and 2001, flirted with the .400 milestone again in 1997, hitting .372. 👉 Do you think the 1994 strike prevented Tony Gwynn from hitting .400 on the year? ⚾️⚾️⚾️ #tonygwynn #padres #sandiegopadres #sandiego #tedwilliams #1990s #baseballhistory #vintagebaseballcards #mlbcards #baseball #vintagesportscards #baseballcards #sportscards #vintagebaseball #vintagesports #classiccards #nostalgia #bazookajoe #topps #MLB #mlballstar #halloffame #vintagebaseball #vintagebubblegum #baseballhalloffame #legend #cooperstown #baseballlifestyle #baseballlife

Down 3-2 in the Series against the Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks Ace Randy Johnson continued to dominate like he had done throughout the 2001 postseason. In 7 innings pitched, Johnson struck out 7 New York batters while allowing their powerful lineup to score just 2 runs in a decisive 15-2 victory. The following night, Johnson made a rare relief appearance, holding the Yankees scoreless for the game’s final 2 innings and picking up the win on a Luis Gonzalez walk-off in the 9th. Johnson went 3-0 during the 7-game series with 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched and a 1.04 ERA. One of the most memorable games in Ryne Sandberg's career is commonly known as "the Sandberg Game." During a 1984 contest between the divisional rival St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, Sandberg, who was then a 24-year-old up-and-coming star, showcased his exceptional skills, becoming a household name. The matchup was marked by a standout performance from St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Willie McGee, who hit for the cycle. However, Sandberg stole the spotlight by helping the Cubs overcome a 9th and 10th-inning deficit. In the bottom of the ninth, with the Cubs behind 8-9 and facing future Hall of Fame closer Bruce Sutter, Sandberg hit a home run into the left-field bleachers to tie the game. St. Louis stormed back in extra innings, scoring two runs in the top of the tenth to regain an 11-9 lead. Bruce Sutter remained in the game in the bottom of the 10th inning, walking Bob Dernier before Sandberg hit another game-tying home run, giving him seven runs batted in on the day. The Cubs ultimately won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning and went on to win the National League East, making their first playoff appearance since 1945. Sandberg finished his breakout season with 19 home runs, 36 doubles, a league-leading 19 triples, and 114 runs scored while batting .314. For his exceptional performance, he was named the 1984 National League Most Valuable Player. 👉 Join me in wishing Ryne Sandberg a speedy recovery. In 1999, Pedro Martinez delivered an unforgettable All-Star Game performance in front of his home crowd at Fenway Park in Boston. The future Hall of Famer struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced, including fellow Hall of Famers Barry Larkin, Larry Walker, and Jeff Bagwell, along with 500-home run club members Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. The American League won the contest 4-1, and Martinez was named the All-Star Game MVP. The Boston Red Sox ace finished the 1999 season with a 23-4 record, 2.07 ERA, and 313 strikeouts - all league bests - earning him the pitching triple crown. Catching is one of the most physically demanding positions in sports. It requires enduring tremendous strain on the knees, back, and hips while also taking the impact of fastballs and foul tips on the body.
