On August 5, 2020, in the early hours of an exceptionally hot and muggy summer morning in Texas, I decided to go for a sunrise walk to the town lake. I regretted it immediately; the humidity and heat smacked me the moment I walked outside. I was drenched in precipitation and sweat. I wanted to turn back but trudged along, taking a route I wouldn't normally. That fateful decision led me to find a tiny yellow kitten screaming in a field in the pre-dawn darkness, faintly illuminated by a single street light. I never made it to the lake that morning but ended up carrying the yellow kitten back home. I walked the first 1.5 miles clutching him in my tank top promising him over and over "No kitten dies on my watch." We got a police escort (long and crazy story) the last half-mile in the back of a cruiser, where I collapsed and he kept screaming. To this day, I wish I took video inside that cop car but I wasn't on social and never could have imagined years later the yellow kitten would be "viral." Finally at home... the rookie cop who was volunteered by his coworkers to drive me home waited for us to get inside the house... I found a bag of Frisky Party Treats in my fridge - a 'free with purchase' item from the supermarket months earlier. I didn't have any pets so the odds of me having a small bag of cat food was remarkably, if not impossibly, slim. I am Tabtex and this is Kyle the yellow kitten from the field's story ๐
