A few weeks ago, I shared a video about why parents respond to behavior the way they do (it's from November 29, 2024—if you missed it, go watch it, and you’ll see what I mean). But here’s the truth: offering your child something “good” after challenging behavior might temporarily stop it, but it won’t solve the issue in the long term. I know—it FEELS like it’s working because the behavior stops temporarily. But remember, anytime a behavior CONTINUES to occur means it’s being reinforced. Once you truly understand how behavior works, those “a-ha” moments make it much easier to stop reinforcing the wrong behaviors. ➡️ DM me READY to grab my Practical Parenting: No Fluff, Just Results course! If you have two items and you’re unsure which one your child wants, you can offer both and observe which one they reach for (make sure they are far enough apart). Once they start reaching, briefly withhold the item and model the correct word for them to say. For example, if you’re holding a block in one hand and a doll in the other, and your child reaches for the doll, pause and say, “Doll.” Have your child echo or sign, “Doll,” and then hand it to them. How do you confirm what your child wants? Sometimes, it’s easy to want to immediately correct every small thing… I am totally guilty of that myself! This is something that I have to actively remind myself NOT to do. And I get it! I’m a teacher… It is so tempting to turn every moment into a teaching opportunity, but the truth is, building a strong relationship with your child is what allows those lessons to stick in the long run. While we can’t do this for EVERYTHING—since there are some activities kids simply aren’t ready for—there are many things they CAN do under supervision. For those activities, teaching them to ask for your help or permission first is a great way to keep them safe while encouraging independence. For example, Grace loves using our water cooler but can sometimes spill water by accident. There’s also a hot water button on it that’s childproofed, but I’d still be nervous if she ever figured out how to use it. To keep her safe, I taught her to ask me when she wants to use the water cooler. That way, I can supervise and ensure everything goes smoothly. Another example is Sophia, who loves exploring my nightstand. While I trust her with what’s inside, there are important documents and scissors in the drawer. The drawer is childproofed for Grace, but Sophia knows how to open it and hasn’t yet learned how to lock it again. To avoid issues, I’ve taught her to ask before looking in the drawer. This way, I can supervise and make sure it’s securely closed afterward. Finally, Grace loves to run. On playgrounds or in open fields, I let her run her little heart out. But on sidewalks, where cars come and go, I’ve taught her to ask me first. This ensures I can make sure it’s safe for her to run. (Of course, one crucial prerequisite for this is that your child stops when you tell them to.) Teaching kids to ask in situations like these creates a system that prioritizes safety without stifling their independence. ➡️ DM me TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on four crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #kidsoftiktok #toddlersoftiktok

I totally get it! Some of the things our kids do can really push our buttons, maybe even make your blood boil. But hear me out! If those behaviors are of no harm to anyone, and are simply meant to annoy you, try your best to let them go. And I know what you are thinking, “How will my child know that’s not okay? Aren't I letting them get away with it?” Not at all! Behavior happens for a reason, and whether it continues depends on the consequences we provide. If your child is doing something to get your attention, and you respond by telling them to stop, you might actually be reinforcing the behavior. In other words, your reaction could be giving them exactly what they’re looking for. The key is to respond in a way that shows you’re unaffected. Even your facial expressions matter—if you look annoyed, that might be enough to encourage the behavior. Sometimes, walking away is your best move. 🛑IMPORTANT!🛑 I often hear, “I ignore my child’s behavior, but it’s not improving.” That’s likely because the reason behind the behavior hasn’t been identified. Understanding the function of behavior is the game-changer! Without that information, it’s hard to address the root cause effectively. ➡️ DM me TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on 4 crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. There’s a bit of an art to this—timing really matters! If you talk too much about a favorite memory BEFORE they put the jacket on, they might lose interest in hearing the rest. But if you wait too long and start after challenging behavior, your child may think they are getting your attention for the challenging behavior. The sweet spot? Start sharing just a little to spark their interest, make sure they’re motivated to hear the rest, and then get the jacket on while they’re engaged. And here’s the thing—you don’t even need to announce, “It’s time to put on your jacket!” Just slip it on while you’re chatting. It may sound small, but understanding motivation and timing makes a HUGE difference. Please keep in mind that even with these proactive strategies, your child might still resist or get upset. That’s completely normal! The key is to stay calm and avoid getting pulled into a back-and-forth. Here’s an example of what not to do: Child: “I want mommy to fill up my water!” Mom: “Daddy will fill up your water, and then mommy will hand you your snack.” Child: “Nooo! I want mommy to fill my water!” Mom: “It’s okay! Daddy can do it just as well as mommy can.” Child: “No, Mommy, you do it!” Mom: “Why don’t we let Daddy do it this time? Daddy loves you and wants to help!” Child: “But I don’t want Daddy—I want YOU!” This type of back-and-forth often escalates the situation, as it unintentionally reinforces the behavior with extra attention. Instead, a more effective response might look like this: Child: “I want mommy to fill up my water!” Mom: “Daddy’s going to fill your water, and I’ll hand you your snack.” Child: “Nooo! I want mommy to fill my water!” Mom: (calmly, without engaging further): “I hear you, but Daddy’s filling it this time. I think we should feed Teddy Bear and Parrot while we eat. Who gets the first bite?!” By staying calm, sticking to the plan, and redirecting your child’s attention, you avoid power struggles and keep things moving forward. Over time, this approach helps your child learn that protesting won’t change the outcome. Consistency and confidence in your response are key! ➡️ DM me TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on four crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #kidsontiktok #toddlersoftiktok #kidsoftiktok

“What if they cry or exhibit challenging behavior?” That’s okay and can be expected—especially if your child has a long learning history of using challenging behavior to remain in an activity longer. When you begin following through immediately with your instructions (if you haven’t been doing so before), you’re no longer reinforcing behavior that was previously reinforced (this is called extinction). As a result, your child may try different challenging behaviors because the old ones aren’t getting the same result they used to. It’s important to note: This is not the time to give in, as your child might then adopt this new behavior as their go-to the next time they don’t want to transition. And remember, extinction can take time– it may be a long and slow process, but when done correctly, it works. Over time, your child will learn, “When my mom asks me to do something, I need to do it when she asks, or she will just prompt me anyway.” Finally, proactive strategies will always be your best option! Sometimes we may not have the right reinforcer, and that’s okay– all we can do is adjust for next time. Here’s the big one! Paying attention to your child BEFORE they have a meltdown is crucial! It’s so easy to overlook the appropriate behaviors our children engage in, and I get it! Us parents have stuff to do! Who has time for this!? But let me tell you, the amount of time you think you are losing by attending to your child during errands or a family outing; you may end up losing having to coax them to leave the toy aisle, sit in the cart, stop taking things off the shelf, leave the restaurant, or stay in their seat— you get the idea! By utilizing this strategy, we mitigate the chances of problem behavior happening, teach our children that engaging in the right behavior gets our attention and that running errands or eating out doesn’t become something we dread! When your child shows a strong preference for one parent, it’s natural for the less-preferred parent to feel hurt or want to convince your child of their love. However, rather than trying to “convince” your child, which can feel overwhelming or pressured, the unpreferred parent can focus on SHOWING love through consistent, positive interactions. Here are a few helpful approaches: 1. Spend one-on-one time doing activities your child enjoys, without forcing connection. 2. Avoid Overcompensating! Trying too hard to win your child over may accidentally have the reverse effect. Believe it or not, our kids are very quick to catch on to this! 3. Show up consistently, even when your child shows preference for the other parent. Over time, predictability builds trust. Wth patience and consistency, your relationship will grow naturally without needing to "convince" your child of your love. Actions speak louder than words ❤️. I get so many questions about what ages my Practical Parenting course is appropriate for, so I figured I would clarify on here... The course is suitable for all ages—I didn’t want to create separate courses and charge addtional fees. Instead, you get lifetime access, so you can revisit the modules as your child grows and your needs evolve. For instance, if you have a baby or younger toddler, you might not need the module on implementing consequences yet. But you can still benefit from setting expectations and holding boundaries. Additionally, proactive strategies at this age are going to be huge in reducing the chances of challenging behaviors from happening. For older children, you wouldn't need the module on cultivating language, but everything else would be applicable. This week I will also be adding modules including topics like food throwing, staying in bed, transitioning from screen time, kids who resist brushing their teeth, and more. You’ll be able to pick and choose what’s most relevant to your family—but I highly recommend watching the modules in order for the best results. Parents of all ages have found the course helpful—from a mom of a 7-month-old to a dad of a 9-year-old who shared how it improved their family dynamic. One mom who signed up for her 2-year-old recently told me she’s also using what she learned with her 4- and 5-year-olds. The principles of behavior apply to all ages, so once you learn about them, you can use them in any scenario. For more information on feedback from parents of a variety of ages, feel free to check out my highlights tab called “testimonials.” DM me READY if you are prepared for peaceful, easy going days without the tantrums and power struggles, and I’ll show you how.  #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #kidsoftiktok #toddlersoftiktok

This one is for you if your child struggles with transitioning from something fun to a less preferred activity (like moving from the iPad to dinner or leaving the park to go home). Once it is time to leave and BEFORE you interrupt the activity, have a promise reinforcer ready before you say anything.  This means you have something good in your hand or have a preferred activity ready for them to transition to.  If that is not feasible, try to utilize something in your environment they are looking forward to. In my video, I used an elephant water toy. Important: Here is what you don’t want to do… Do not remove the instruction to leave once problem behavior has already occurred and do not offer more alternative items. Doing so reinforces that challenging behavior produces good things, increasing the likelihood of it happening again in the future. Kids are incredibly perceptive and can pick up on the slightest hint of frustration or panic. Believe it or not, how we say something is just as important as what we say. Keeping our tone calm and neutral ensures we’re addressing the behavior without reinforcing it. Additionally, if your kids are engaging in unsafe behavior as a way to get your attention, take that as a cue to provide them with more attention proactively. Think about it—when we have plenty of something, we don’t crave it as much. Finally, you may need to teach them an alternative, more appropriate behavior to your attention. ➡️ Comment TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on four crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier. #aba #appliedbehavioranalysis #behavior #parenting #parentsofinstagram #positiveparenting #parentingtips #toddlers #toddlersofinstagram #behaviormanagement #parentsupport #momssupportingmoms #momsofinstagram #parenttraining #parent #bcba #rbt #parentcoach #toddlertantrums #toddlermom #toddlermomlife #behavioranalysis #behavioranalyst #behaviors #parentingjourney #parentsbelike #parenthood #parentsoftiktok #kidsoftiktok #teachersoftiktok
🌟 If your child says one word, you can expand on it to model a more complete sentence. For example, if your child says “car,” you might respond with, “The car is going so fast! Let’s drive!” 🌟 Don’t omit words from your sentences. For example, “mommy do.” Instead, model the correct sentence structure. 🌟 Use a fun, excited tone of voice —big eyes and wide smiles make all a big difference! 🌟 Describing what you’re doing during play helps your child associate your voice with enjoyable activities. When your voice is consistently paired with fun and excitement, it encourages your child to pay attention and see communication as motivating.
