bell hooks was a literary giant who taught us that love is a radical act and that liberation starts with knowledge. Born Gloria Jean Watkins, she took the name bell hooks to honor her great-grandmother and wrote in lowercase to shift focus to her words, not her ego. She gave us Ain’t I a Woman?, All About Love, and Teaching to Transgress—books that shook the table on race, feminism, education, and how we love ourselves and each other. She showed us that love ain’t just a feeling—it’s a practice, a commitment, and a tool for healing our communities. With over 30 books, countless awards, and a legacy rooted in truth-telling, hooks made sure Black folks—especially Black women—knew our worth. She told us love without justice ain't real love, and that true freedom starts in the mind. Rest in power to a woman who gave us the language to love, resist, and be free. ✊🏾
