So, how long should you study for the MCAT? 3 months? 6 months? 1 year? 1 week? (Spoiler: No. ❌) MCAT study plans are not one-size-fits-all. The amount of time you should study for the MCAT will depend on several factors such as your goal score, current knowledge base, study habits, and personal commitments. While some may only need a few months to prepare, others may benefit from a longer study period. Above all, take your time. Don’t rush the process. This means, for most people with busy schedules, if you’re planning to take the MCAT this summer, it’s probably a good idea to start your MCAT prep now so you have enough time to get through the content review, practice, practice review, and repeat. Not sure where/how to get started? Start by creating a free MCAT study schedule with our Study Planner Tool! 💾 Save this post for later! Did you know most of your required basic pre-med courses also cover a lot of the information you will need for the MCAT? This means saving those flashcards and notes you made for those classes will likely save you some stress in the future. (Trust us—you’ll thank yourself later! 🙌) MCAT Sections: ✅ Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems (Bio/Biochem) ✅ Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems (Chem/Phys) ✅ Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior (Psych/Soc) ✅ Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) Let’s break down the science sections with their complex names into subjects that you would study in college: ⭐️ General Inorganic Chemistry ⭐️ Intro to Organic Chemistry ⭐️ Intro to Physics ⭐️ Intro to Biology ⭐️ Intro to Biochemistry
The MCAT also tests topics often not covered in basic science courses. So, we recommend you consider the following courses: ✅ Gen Chem Analytical ✅ Genetics or Molecular Biology And we can’t forget the Psych/Soc section: ✅ Intro to Psychology or Neuroscience ✅ Intro to Sociology Many students wonder if they can start their MCAT prep if they haven’t taken a medical school prerequisite or “recommended” course. Don’t worry! 😉 As long as you plan your MCAT prep intentionally to reflect any missing coursework, follow AAMC guidelines, and practice a TON, you will be just as successful on the MCAT as the next student! Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all MCAT prep plan. You must be adaptive and flexible as you progress through studying. With diligence and determination, you can learn the necessary material and achieve your goal score! Need help creating an MCAT study schedule that works for you?
