Who can relate? As a medical student, I was always scared to ever scrub out of a case. You know how it is: you got to get that gleaming letter of rec from whatever surgeon you worked with, even though they may not know your name! The worst scenario for a medical student is having to hold a retractor in the least comfortable position imaginable for an extended period of time. I have been in that situation. To add insult to injury, sometimes you realize you really have to go to the bathroom. After this happened once, I learned to limit fluid intake right before long surgeries very quickly. All jokes aside, you can scrub out to use the restroom if you have to. However, it can be difficult though for a medical student to build up the courage to admit they have to scrub out it, particularly if you're trying to impress the surgeon and you want to go into a surgical residency yourself. To all the med students out there, we appreciate your help and just know that it's going to get better! And if you really have to go to the bathroom, by all means let us know and just scrub out. As for the brachial plexus, that's the one you might just have to memorize, at least while you're on your orthopedic surgery rotation.
