How Breastfeeding Works 🤱 Breastfeeding operates on a beautifully designed system of supply and demand! The more your baby nurses or milk is removed, the more signals your body receives to produce milk. This process is powered by two incredible hormones: ✨ Prolactin: The 'milk-making hormone,' responsible for producing breast milk. ✨ Oxytocin: Known as the 'love hormone,' it triggers the letdown reflex, releasing milk to your baby while fostering a sense of calm, relaxation, and connection for both of you. 💕 Frequent nursing, skin-to-skin contact, and responding to your baby’s feeding cues are key to keeping this amazing system running smoothly. Your body is designed to adapt perfectly to your baby’s needs – the more milk removed, the more milk your body makes! 🌟 This process is a testament to how intricately nature supports both nourishment and bonding. 🎥 Video from Ph.D. research by Dr. Nikki Mills, University of Auckland, New Zealand. 🌙 Did you know there’s a key time when your body is primed to produce even more milk? 🍼 While everyone else sleeps, your prolactin levels—the hormone behind milk production—are at their highest. If you have eliminated your middle-of-the-night pump time or stretched the time between sessions in the middle of the night, you may need to add it back in or decrease the time between milk removals. Prolactin levels have their own circadian rhythm and are highest in the middle of the night, peaking between 2-5 am. When milk is removed in the middle of the night when prolactin is already elevated, it helps protect your overall milk supply. Yes, it can feel tough to wake up when the world is still, but those nighttime sessions can be a powerful tool to protect your supply. In fact, babies get about 20% of their calories from the milk they drink during the night. Those nighttime sessions are CRUCIAL to establishing and increasing milk supply. How breastfeeding works 🤱 Breastfeeding is all about supply and demand! 🤱 The more often a baby nurses or milk is removed, the more signals your body gets to produce milk. This process is regulated by prolactin, the milk making hormone and oxytocin, the “love hormone”, which triggers the letdown reflex, releasing milk to your baby and creating a sense of calm and connection. It’s also the reason for that famous breastfeeding thirst 💦. Frequent nursing, skin- to- skin contact, and responding to your baby’s cues help keep this system running smoothly. Feeling under the weather and unsure if you should continue breastfeeding? Here’s the truth: this is one of the MOST important times to keep going! Your breast milk is packed with antibodies specifically designed to fight the illness you’re dealing with, giving your baby the protection they need. 💕 Stopping breastfeeding now could actually increase your baby’s risk of getting sick, but most medications are safe—and there’s almost always a substitute if needed. Always advocate for yourself and your baby if you’re advised to stop breastfeeding or pump and dump. You’re protecting their health in ways no one else can! 🌟 💬 Have questions about breastfeeding?
