Everything we preserved in January— a pretty successful month in general, but a slow start to the year! In February, my goal is to get going on some cans of dry beans that we have in our cantry. #Cantry #Canning #Preserving #FoodPreservation #LowWaste #Sustainable #Sustainability #Eco #Ecofriendly #LowWaste #Food #Recipes #Garden #Cranberries #Sourdough #RedOnions #TacoSauce #VacuumSealing

QUICK CANTRY TOUR! This is one of the most requested videos I get— a can’t tour! Although it’s utterly impossible to share every product I can in just my basement cantry in 1.5minutes, I’ll do my best!! (Perhaps a YouTube video would be a better idea??) When we first moved here almost 2 years ago, we planned on building a permanent, fancy cantry downstairs of some sort… But clearly we have not gotten to that point yet, hence the janky set up—but it works! We grow/raise roughly 90% of what’s on these shelves, otherwise we source locally when it comes to berries and peaches and buy bulk goods like dried beans! It’s almost February which means we’ve already consumed hundreds of jars already since fall— no, literally! I’ll have to make another video of my “top 5 canned goods” we use every week! Remember, this is an 1880 basement so keeping dust off is impossible. Don’t worry, we clean our jars when we use them! I don’t can some items every year as you can probably see by some dates. Why? Those handful of items we go through slower plus we purposely rotate every season on what we focus our gardens to pump out! For example: green beans. I’ll grow rows of green beans one year to stock up on canned and frozen beans then the next year I plant fewer rows of beans to use for fresh eating, pickling, and freeze extras and plant more tomatoes instead to focus my energy on tomato products! Make sense? Some things I make many times a year— canned mushrooms, baked beans, stocks, etc! I didn’t have enough time in this segment to share my freezer stash or cold crop stash with you, but maybe in another video?? Thanks for watching and reading! #Canning #Preserving #Farm #Farmhouse #FarmhousePantry #Pantry #cantry #farmhousecantry #Homesteading

FIVE MUST HAVES! Let's just say I was starting my food storage or was trying to build it on a budget. What 5 items would I have?? Sugar, Flour ( wheat berries store even longer) and Salt. They are some of the first things that sky rocket in price or are rationed during hard times and natural disasters; these three ingredients are also the basis of so many recipes! Beans- are a source of protein that will last forever and they can be stored dry or pressure canned! They make the perfect addition to your food storage. Rice- is a great carbohydrate to have on hand. It can be stored dry and & it's easy to cook! You dont have to buy the biggest bags you can find if it's not in your budget, start small and build from there. Having a bit of each is better than nothing at all. BONUS items - water- If I have any one spots in my canner I always can water. We also always have local raw honey on hand. We often times substitute for sugar in recipes! 🍯 Later we can talk about ways to store them! Of course there is so many more we love to have but this is a great start; what other items would you add to the list?... #growingahomestead #homesteadliving #emergencypreparedness #frugalliving #frugallife #frugal #homesteaders #homesteadersofamerica! #wildrootacres #homesteadingmama #homesteadingskills #urbanfarming #wisconsinlife #cantry
