I wish I didn’t have to talk about this, but we must. The Office of the Attorney General has quietly revived the death penalty for federal prosecutions — and buried in the memo is a sneaky line about using it against immigrants who cross our borders and commit crimes. This is alarming, but unfortunately, it’s not new. History has shown us time and again how racism fuels policies that dehumanize immigrants. Political cartoons from the 1800s depicted Italians being drowned and Chinese immigrants being executed. And today, the rhetoric is back and increasingly hostile and xenophobic. So, what can we do? Start the conversation. Speak out. Challenge the misinformation. Our national dialogue must shift toward recognizing and appreciating the invaluable contributions of immigrants. It must be one of respect, truth, and humanity. History is repeating itself, and silence is not an option.
