This is the part of marriage that we don’t prepare for or think about until you’re in it: the ‘in sickness’ clause of your vows. As a kid I had my fair share of moments being a caretaker and helping my grandparents take care of others. When it came time for me to be Bae’s caretaker I knew I could handle it but I didn’t realize how much of a mental hurdle he’d have to go through during the process. This process has taught me that being a caretaker has layers. Those layers aren’t just about what needs to be done as a caretaker but also what needs to be considered for the person needing care. It’s not easy asking for help or accepting help in that capacity. If you’re ever granted the opportunity to be a caretaker, practice understanding. Being that vulnerable and in need has more layers to it and can sometimes cause lashing out, depression, hopelessness and frustration. Extend Grace and understand that it’s a process that you both have to work together to win at! #caretaker #blacklove
