Can you believe that Chevy decided not to produce this concept truck? In 1985, Chevrolet was secretly developing a compact pickup called the Poncho, designed to compete directly with the Ford Ranger. This truck was meant to be Chevy’s answer to the growing small truck market, offering more power, better styling, and improved off-road capability. Built on a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive platform, the Poncho was set to feature a 2.8L V6, an optional manual transmission, and four-wheel drive. Chevy engineers planned an aggressive design with flared fenders, a short wheelbase, and a sportier stance than the Ranger. Some insiders claim an SS version with a turbocharged four-cylinder was in development, but it never saw the light of day. But just as it was nearing prototype testing, Chevy pulled the plug. Some say it was too close to the S-10, while others believe internal GM politics killed the project. Would the Poncho have been a Ford Ranger killer? Should Chevy have built it?
