Have you ever sprouted lentils for your chickens? đŸŒ±đŸ“ Here’s how to get started: 1. Go Grab Yourself Some Lentils! You can find them in almost every grocery store. I got these at Target. 2. Find the Perfect Container: Use a *non-airtight* vessel so you’re not trapping the air. You want to create a terrarium-like environment and prevent mold. This jar is from Homegoods— it’s a noodle storage container with a sealed/locking lid. I just took those sealing parts off so the lid is loose. 3. Begin with a Thin Layer: Just barely cover the bottom of the jar with lentils. They’ll eventually grow out of the jar if you add too many. There’s also a greater chance they’ll mold too. 4. Soak Overnight: Fill the jar with water and let the lentils soak until morning (about 8 hours) 5. Drain and Rinse: After soaking, drain and rinse the lentils. Note: make sure to drain ALL the water out from this step forward! No more soaking or else they’ll ferment đŸš« 6. Repeat Step 5 DAILY: Keep up the rinse and drain cycle 1-2 times per day until the lentils are sprouted. đŸŒ± Why sprout lentils? Sprouted lentils unlock a treasure trove of nutrients, making them a super healthy snack for your chickens. They are rich in vitamins and minerals that will aiding in your flock’s overall health and egg production. In a season where greens are often nowhere to be found, these sprouts are a great addition to their diet.
 and humans can eat them too! 😋 💡 Make sure to save this for later so you can give it a try. #healthychickens #happychickens #backyardchickens #chickenkeeper #sproutinglentils #lentils #sprouts #chickentreats #chickenfodder #chickenlady #petchickens #chickenkeepingtips #growingsprouts

Rhode Island Reds land the #2 spot on my list, and honestly, they’re everything you could want in a backyard chicken. 🐔🌟 Steady layers, amazing foragers, gorgeous feathers, and they can handle Florida’s heat like champs. But let’s be real—their sass is what really steals the show! I’ve never met an animal with as much attitude as a Rhode Island Red. My Red would “talk back” about everything and turn laying time into a full-on opera performance. Who says chickens are quiet?! 😂 Do you have a sassy chicken in your flock? Let me know which breed has the most personality in your coop! #BackyardChickens #ChickenBreeds #UrbanHomestead #FloridaGardening #ChickenKeepingTips #HomesteadingLife #SustainableLiving #funnychickens #rhodeislandred

Cuckoo Marans are gorgeous birds and lay those beautiful dark chocolate eggs everyone loves
but they’re #4 on my list of chicken breeds for a reason. đŸ”â˜€ïž In Florida’s heat, they really struggle, and keeping them cool can be a constant challenge. If you’re new to chicken keeping in Florida, choosing heat-tolerant breeds is so important! Our summers can be brutal, and not all chickens handle the heat the same way. Have you had success with Cuckoo Marans in hot climates? Or do you have a go-to breed for Florida heat? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #BackyardChickens #ChickenBreeds #FloridaGardening #UrbanHomestead #ChickenKeepingTips #SustainableLiving #HomesteadingLife #GardeningAndHomesteading

#ameraucanas take the #3 spot on my list of favorite chicken breeds, and honestly, there’s nothing I dislike about them! 🐔💙 Their blue eggs are just as gorgeous as you’d imagine, and their curious, adventurous personalities always keep things interesting. Sure, they can be a little “flighty,” but I think it just adds to their charm. If you’re looking for a fun breed to add to your flock, Ameraucanas are a great choice—especially if you want a pop of color in your egg basket!
