1. Think about the best boss you’ve ever had—someone you respected and wanted to work hard for. Now think about the worst. Chances are, you put in more effort for the one you actually liked. Parenting works the same way. Kids are more likely to listen to people they enjoy being around. That doesn’t mean you have to be their best friend, but a strong, positive relationship makes all the difference when it’s time for them to follow directions. 2. It might feel kind to explain things to your child during challenging behavior, but please know that besides reinforcing challenging behavior, it typically just prolongs it. Your best bet is to stay calm and hold your boundary. 3. Avoid back-and-forth arguments with your child. Sometimes I remind my husband, “You’re 37. She’s 5 (or 2). You don’t have to say a thing!” Engaging in back-and-forth just brings you down to their level. Instead, model the behavior you want to see—because if you model arguing, that’s exactly what you’ll get more of. 4. And remember, reinforcement is far more effective than punishment. Punishment leaves kids to figure things out on their own, and many won’t. Instead, focus on reinforcing the behaviors you want to see more of—it leads to real, lasting change. ➡️ Comment TOOLKIT for a free mini crash course video on 4 crucial strategies every parent must know to make their life easier.
