Behold! As a scientist who was born & raised in LA, I have been aware of the increasing fire dangers over the last several decades. And given LA’s recent devastating & unprecedented fires, I wanted to go over the differences between weather and climate, and the causes of climate change. So here’s Mother Earth, Weather, & Climate to break down the difference between weather and climate…AND give you a basic lesson about climate change. Btw, thank you @watchdutyapp for helping Angelenos stay informed & safe! . Weather is essentially how the atmosphere is behaving over the course of hours, weeks, months. It includes specific weather events, like a thunderstorm, hurricane, heat wave, or typhoon. . Climate is the average weather over time in a specific region. Climate is not a specific weather event, but an average of all weather events in a 30 or more year period. This includes precipitation, temperature, and humidity. . Climate change is the long-term shift in weather patterns over a period of time. Climate change can be caused by many natural phenomena- like the intensity of the sun or volcanic eruptions. However, countless climate scientists attribute recent rapid climate change (in the past 100 years) to an excess of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by human activity. This includes the burning of fossil fuels to generate power, deforestation, and the raising of life stock. FYI, greenhouse gases aren’t inherently bad. In fact, the greenhouse effect is what makes Earth a great planet to live on! Already present greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, they help keep the earth warm. But when there’s too much greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, it traps more & more heat from the sun and leads to warming global temperatures. . #fyp #climatechange #deforestation #greenhouseeffect #weather #scicomm #climatescience #climatecrisis #palisadesfire #eatonfire
