Hi! Certified Trichologist and Nutrition for Aging Expert hereπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Let's talk coconut oil! Breaking the myths.. πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ Coconut oil is one of the best things you can do for your hair! BUT, there's a catch! πŸ§β€β™€οΈ CO is composed of omega fatty acids and nutrients that are beneficial for the hair and hair growth, especially if you aren't getting enough good fatty acids in your diet. However, you must ingest the coconut oil in order to get the benefits of the fatty acids. πŸ₯₯ Coconut oil has large molecules that can not penatrate your hair or scalp due to the large molecular structure. Therefore, it can not be absorbed properly for you to get the beneficial nutrients by applying it directly to your hair. πŸ₯₯ By applying CO directly to your hair, the oil gets trapped in your cuticle and the cuticle is unable to shut and close properly. Think of a flap on a standard size envelope. βœ‰ Now imagine putting an orange 🍊 in that envelope. Your envelope wouldn't be able to hold the orange. The flap wouldn't be able to seal right.. The weight would be too heavy and the envelope would most likely tear over time due to the added weight and stress of the orange. βœ‰πŸŠ Coconut oil does the same thing to your hair. So, to get the most benefit out of coconut oil, you must eat it! πŸ’β€β™€οΈ Now, there's a caveat to eating the CO. CO is also high in Saturated Fat and can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. So as a Nutritionist, I would not advise using CO as your source for OFA. Instead, opt for white fish 2-3x a week or add olive oil into your regular diet. Back to CO on your hair, I see this a lot in my practice. People put CO directly on their hair and scalp thinking it's helping when in reality, over time,Β  it smoothers the hair shaft and follicle causing the follicle to recede and become dormant. I then have to put them on an aggressive detox regime to clear out the oil and build up. So trust me, stick with eating the coconut oil (or fish)! πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ Some hair and skin products will have coconut oil in them. Its important to know these ingredients are manipulated and formulated to be molecularly stable for the hair and are not like the CO you get in a jar. βš– So next time you go to put CO on your hair, remember, eat it instead! πŸ˜‰ Please feel free to reach out for more information or with any questions about hair Science or hair loss!❀ #trichologist #hairtok #mandybbeauty #hairloss #trichology #coconutoilforhair #hairgrowth #healthyhairhabits #healthyhair #scalphealth #hairhealth #healthyscalp #hairscience
