Weāve been curious about Sitar in New Haven for years, so when we heard that they had remodeled and added a bunch of new menu items, we decided it was time to finally stop by! Indian food is one of Coltenās favorite cuisines, and it fit perfectly into our winter comfort food series š„° Since we were in the adventurous spirit, we tried two dishes weāve never had before - malai chicken kebab and goat curry! We werenāt sure how we were going to feel about goat, but it was so good, and the way it was cooked reminded us of short rib! Sitarās many is very diverse, with an emphasis on northern Indian cuisine. The restaurant has a perfect balance of maintaining tradition while also embracing a modern flair. Many times when we find ourselves on the Berlin Turnpike, we stop in to @T-Swirl Crepe šBerlin, CT for a little treat! š They specialize in Japanese style crepes, which are made with rice flour rather than wheat flour, making them gluten-free! Youāll find them to be crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. They hold the fillings so well that you can skip the fork & knife and just take a bite, making it an easy on-the-go snack! @T-Swirl Crepe has so many flavors to choose from! On this visit, we went with their refreshing strawberry cheesecake crepe, as well as one of their newest flavors, dulce de leche! T-Swirl offers boba tea in addition to crepes, so we had their taro milk tea and strawberry banana slush. You can find T-Swirl nationwide, with CT locations in Berlin, Fairfield, New Haven, Middletown, and the Danbury Mall. You can also order delivery through UberEats and DoorDash! Weāre closing out National Pizza Week with the results from Round 2 of our Naugatuck Pizza Wars! š Before we announce our results, we want to say that this was all in good fun as a winter activity with our friends & family. Pizza is very subjective & everyoneās opinions will be different! Having lived in town my whole life, I was curious to know what all the pizzerias were like & find my true favorite pizza in town. We hope this will encourage you all to do the same & support your local pizzerias! š„And with that, our favorite pizza in Naugatuck isā¦š„ š VINNYāS! š They actually were our go-to for years! When they moved buildings, we fell away from going mostly due to tough parking. We wish the appearance of the pizza itself was better (it was pretty bubbly), but they really nailed the flavor, crust, and sauce to cheese ratio. Compared to all of the pizzas, there was just no denying it had the best flavor in our opinion! š„ Second place goes to an underdog, A1! We had never tried them until last Friday. As the winner in round 1, they moved into round 2 and proved their consistency with another delicious pizza. Picture perfect, with pretty much no critiques - if they had slightly more flavor, they couldāve edged out Vinnyās for us. š„ Third place goes to Giuseppeās! They are a childhood favorite of Coltenās. It was very tasty! Our only critique was on the crust, which we thought was plain. In our mid tier were New Hop Brook, Bellissimo, Marioās, Luna, and The Hub. New Hop Brook & Bellissimo were both not bad at all, especially flavor-wise. We could definitely see ourselves ordering again. Marioās was a bit greasy and had too much oregano - it almost had a smoky flavor? Luna and The Hub are both wood-fired, and while we typically like thin crust/New Haven style pizza, we found them to be a bit too charred for our liking and thought sauce to cheese ratios couldāve been better. Our least favorites were La Casa & Paesanoās. La Casa was unevenly cooked, being half burnt underneath and covered in bubbles. The sauce at Paesanoās was too sweet. West Hartfordās newest restaurant, The Laurel is officially open starting today! š We visited during their pre-opening Friends & Family event on Monday, and all we can say is WOW! Owner & Chef Ashley Flagg, formerly of Millwrightās in Simsbury, truly impressed us with her incredible menu and delicious, locally-sourced food. We were excited to see so many unique options from around the world, and she nailed every single one that we tried. Itās nice to have a different tapas-style restaurant in the area, and the menu really reflects the ownerās talent as a chef while remaining unpretentious. Even the drinks were amazing, and the mocktail was one of the best Iāve had! Despite it being their first night open, the service was flawless. The ambiance is perfect for a date night, special event, or gathering with friends. Located in the former Corner Pug restaurant, the space has been beautifully transformed into The Laurel while maintaining the historical charm of the building. Their mofongo is made fresh to order, and the pernil was cooked perfectly.
