Parental alienation allegations flip your custody case immediately! It’s actually the perfect term for what is happening: one parent (you can guess who…) brainwashes the child to hate their other parent. Sentences like “See, your mother left you! She’s the one who moved out!” “Your mother doesn’t love you anymore. She wanted the divorce.” And much more subtle jabs at the “safe” parent. But then guess what happens? The child sees through the BS and favors the safe parent. The one they know is good and who hasn’t said anything negative and who takes care of them - physically and emotionally. That is what is happening when you leave a narcissist…. And you as the safe person are just trying to protect your child from the abuse. And then the narcissist will turn it around and scream “Parental alienation” and you can’t even catch on with what is happening but suddenly your custody case gets flipped. That’s because back in the 1980s, dads were annoyed with having to pay so much child support (which depends on the time split between the two homes). In order to get more custody and pay less child support, psychologist Richard Gardner was called in to testify that the mom was alienating the father - keeping the kids from the father on purpose. He would argue that this would negatively impact children’s behavior and that they needed to be reunited with their fathers. So judges would flip custody to the fathers… and that is where we are still today. The concept of Parental Alienation has been completely discredited but the courts haven’t caught on and fathers still use it to take custody away from mothers, continuing the cycle of abuse to the children. In order to not end up with parental alienation claims, which are really hard to fight, you have to set yourself up for immaculate co-parenting. This is what I help my clients with every day.
