The term “Madam President” was used today to address Vice President Kamala Harris in her role of President of the Senate. She was sitting right next to US Speaker Mike Johnson of the House of Representatives. The 4 officials aiding in the count today were Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar (D), Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer (R) for the Senate and Representatives Bryan Steil (R) of Wisconsin and Joe Morelle (D) of New York for the House. In fact, today, Harris presided over a joint session of Congress to certify the US election, a pro-forma act before President-elect Donald Trump swears in on January 20. Article 1 of Constitution of the United States provides: “The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided.” In this capacity, VPs have the sole power to break a tie vote in the Senate and formally preside over the receiving and counting of electoral ballots cast in presidential elections — as it happened today on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. From 1789 until the 1950s, however, the primary duty of US Vice Presidents was solely to preside over the US Senate. Since the 1830s, VPs have occupied offices near the Senate Chamber. Over the course of the nation’s history, the Vice President’s influence evolved as vice presidents and senators experimented with, and at times vigorously debated, the role to be played by this constitutional officer. #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy
Ahead of Inauguration Day on Monday, January 20, US President-elect Donald Trump, his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump, and their son Barron boarded the Special Air Mission plane — a US government plane — that will take them from Mar-a-Lago to Washington, D.C. The Trump family — including Ivanka Trump, her husband, Jared Kushner, Eric and Lara Trump, and their children also boarded the Special Air Mission plane. Trump is holding a reception and fireworks show tonight at his golf club in Virginia. On Sunday, he will lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery and then hold a “Victory Rally” in Washington DC ahead of Monday’s swearing-in ceremony, which has now been moved inside to the Capitol Rotunda because of frigid temperatures in the nation’s capital. According to reports, Trump will stay over Sunday night at Blair House, the private guest house of the White House, and will take tea Monday morning with outgoing President Joe Biden before heading to the Capitol. #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy

President Donald Trump blasted European regulation and trade policies in his speech last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, pledging to slap tariffs on companies that choose to produce outside of the United States. For months now, Europe has been bracing for possible trade restrictions under a new Trump administration. But while Trump pledged across-the-board tariffs during the campaign, many economists and analysts have viewed those threats as more of a bargaining chip than a concrete plan. But for now, the president doubled down on aiming at countering what he called “unfair” European trading practices. “We have, you know, hundreds of millions of dollars of deficits with the EU [European Union], and nobody’s happy with it,” Trump said about all products and services, including agriculture, tech, EVs. “We’re going to do something about it.” Trump’s comments came as European politicians have been scrambling to prepare for Trump2.0 and possible tariffs, while expressing a willingness to make a deal. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during her speech at Davos that Europe’s “first priority will be to engage early, discuss common interests, and be ready to negotiate.” The better positioned for that seems to be Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, the only European and G7 leader at Trump’s inauguration on January 20.  Just this past week, during his trip to California, Trump was asked a question about whether he would give Italy a break on tariffs, given his relation with Meloni. He said: “Well, I like her very much.  Let’s see what happens.” And Meloni has been described by many — in Europe and in the US — a possible transatlantic bridge. Just yesterday, during his trip to California, US President President Donald Trump said about Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy: "I like her very much." He was actually asked a question about whether he would give Italy a break on tariffs, given his relation with Meloni. He said: "Well, I like her very much.  Let’s see what happens." Now, can Meloni use her special relation with Trump -- as well as with Trump's top advisor, Elon Musk -- to her advantage? After Meloni visited Mar-a-Lago a few weeks before inauguration day, she told reporters she enjoys a "privileged relation" with Trump and that Italy and the US have and will continue to have strong bilateral relations. Trump said during her Mar-a-Lago visit: “This is very exciting. I’m here with a fantastic woman, the prime minister of Italy. She’s really taken Europe by storm.” The rest is history... And on January 20, Meloni was the only European and G7 leader attending Trump's inauguration in person in Washington DC.  "Trump has chosen her for credibility, reliability and for the stability of our government as the preferred interlocutor in the EU," an official in Meloni's government was quoted as saying in the media. "This is useful for Italy and will also be useful for the EU." European leaders, for now, are just observing how the Trump-Meloni relation is evolving, especially when it comes to possible tariffs the new US administration wants to put in place against Europe.  "Italy will always be committed to consolidating the dialogue between the United States and Europe, as an essential pillar for the stability and growth of our communities," Meloni said in a statement after applauding Trump's swearing-in. Meloni is also close to billionaire Elon Musk, who has emerged as a key mover and shaker in the president's inner circle. Musk described Meloni as "someone who is even more beautiful inside than outside" at a black-tie event in New York in September last year. The Italian leader replied Musk was a "precious genius." Her close relation with Musk has however brought negative attention in a few occasions, most recently around the release from Iran of an Italian journalist and regarding a cybersecurity deal SpaceX's Starlink -- owned and operated by Musk -- is pursuing with the Italian government. In both cases, Musk said he played a key role.  #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy

No, it’s not signed yet… but a deal that would include Elon Musk’s SpaceX take over secure communications for the Italian government — the largest such project in Europe — is reportedly back on track and near final approval after Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with US President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago this past weekend. If the contract will be signed, SpaceX’s Starlink will supply Italy with a full range of top-level encryption for telephone and Internet services for the Italian civilian government as well as military apparatus, including a direct-to-cell service allowing for coverage in emergencies if traditional mobile seevices are unavailable. Discussions are currently ongoing for the deal, estimated at over $1.5 billion, and a final agreement on the 5-year contract hasn’t been reached yet. The project, however, has reportedly already been approved by Italy’s intelligence services and by the Ministry of Defense. The negotiations, which had stalled for quite some time, appeared to have moved forward quickly after Italian Prime Minister Meloni visited Trump in Florida. It wasn’t immediately clear if Musk — a top advisor to Trump — was in attendance at Mar-a-Lago. The plan has been under review since 2023 and it seems to have been opposed by some Italian officials concerned about how it could potentially detract from local Italian telecom and Internet carriers. Italy said Meloni and Trump did not discuss the SpaceX contract during their meeting. "The prime minister's office categorically denies, considering it ridiculous, that SpaceX was a topic during the meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump," Meloni's office said in a note. The Starlink telecom services program has been growing steadily. In 2024 alone, Musk added more than 20 countries and Starlink now serves more than 4 million people in 100-plus countries and territories, blanketing the globe with broadband services. According to reports, Starlink strategy has been pushing out local and international legacy telecom operators while outpacing fresh challenges from Big Tech like Amazon and countries like China. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy

Let’s see what is happening at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Europe “needs to step up” and “learn how to take care of itself so the world can’t ignore it.” Speaking just the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as President of the United States, Zelensky compared the strength of the US with what he called the weakness of the European Union. “Twenty hours ago, President Trump’s inauguration took place in Washington,” Zelensky said. “And now everyone is waiting to see what he’ll do next. Most of the world’s now thinking — so, what’s gonna happen to their relationship with America? What will happen to alliances? To support? To trade? How does President Trump plan to end wars?” Zelensky focused part of his speech to technology and AI, saying that “Europe is falling behind in the development of artificial intelligence.” He added: “Already, TikTok’s algorithms are more powerful than some governments. Already, the fate of small countries depends more on the owners of tech companies than on their laws.” He explained: “Europe is not leading in the global tech race, falling behind both America and China. This isn’t some minor issue – it’s about weakness, first technological and economic, then political. Europe is often more focused on regulation than on freedom, but when smart regulation is needed, Brussels hesitates. We should ensure maximum tech development in Europe and together make all significant decisions – for the whole Europe.” Trump, speaking yesterday via video, also called out the European Union for its antitrust battles with American tech giants, saying the billions of dollars in fines they’ve levied against US companies amount to a tax on American corporations. “From the standpoint of America, the EU treats us very poorly, very badly,” he said, blasting EU cases against Apple, Google, and Meta. “These are American companies and they shouldn’t be doing that.” #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy

US President Donald Trump spoke about several of his top foreign policy priorities in public comments over the weekend, including his desire to purchase Greenland and the possibility of turning Canada into the 51st State. “I think Greenland will be worked out with us,” Trump said in a roughly 20-minute question-and-answer session with reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Miami on Saturday. “I think we’re going to have it. And I think the people want to be with us.” Trump has said as far back as 2019 that he wants the US to buy Greenland, a massive Arctic island that is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Though Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen replied at the time that Greenland is “not for sale,” Trump indicated on Saturday that he’s still keen to make Greenland a part of the United States. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Frederiksen reiterated that “Greenland is for Greenlanders.” In the meantime, Greenland Prime Minister said his people “don’t want to be Americans.” Greenland contains critical natural resources such as rare earth minerals and uranium. Trump says the US could provide security to the island and beyond. “I don’t know really what claim Denmark has to it. But it would be a very unfriendly act if they didn’t allow that to happen because it’s for protection of the free world. It’s not for us, it’s for the free world,” Trump said. According to reports, Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland during a phone call with Frederiksen. As for Canada, Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on the neighboring country in his second term, saying last weekend that Canada has been “treating us very unfairly on trade.” “I love Canada. I have so many friends up in Canada. And they like us. They like me. But Canada has been taking advantage of the United States for years, and we’re not going to let that happen,” he added. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said earlier this month that his country becoming the 51st US state is “not going to happen.” #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy

Has Elon Musk crossed the line? Well, hard to say… This time Musk is not only clashing with OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, he’s also publicly attacking the $500 billion Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure project touted by US President Donald Trump. “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk — who was not at the White House press conference — commented on X about OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, the three tech companies that joined Trump for the Stargate project. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority,” Musk added. Altman responded: “Wrong, as you surely know. This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put America first.” It is the latest in a feud between the two tech billionaires that started on OpenAI’s board and is now testing Musk’s influence with the new president. That’s a lot of drama for a feel-good photo op. Clearly — some suggest — there seems to be more is at stake than just a few minutes onstage with the new president. The new AI entity, Stargate, is already starting to build out data centers and the electricity generation needed for the further development of fast-evolving AI technology. Altman told Musk: “Want to come visit the first site already under way?” Trump declared Stargate “a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential” under his new administration, with an initial private investment of $100 billion that could reach five times that sum. But Musk, a close Trump adviser and a co-founder of OpenAI, is questioning the value of the investment and is doubling down on Sam Altman, just hours after Trump’s White House announcement. Musk has not stopped there and — after re-posting on X a post by Altman from 2021 against Trump — he posted: “Altman literally testified to Congress that he wouldn’t get OpenAI compensation and now he wants $10 billion! What a liar.” Musk was referring to the fact that OpenAI, last year, became a for profit company from being a not for profit, and Altman reportedly got a 7% stake. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy

Here’s what we know... Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Argentinian President Javier Milei will be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration tomorrow, January 20, in Washington DC. Meloni, the leader of a G7 and NATO country, will be the highest-ranking representative from Europe. According to reports, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron were not invited and will be represented by their ambassadors in Washington DC. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not spoken about a possible attendance at Trump’s inauguration. Instead, he said this week that he expects to meet with Trump after the inauguration. Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend, but instead sent his Vice President Han Zheng. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be represented by Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has not confirmed his attendance yet. Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa confirmed his attendance. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban won’t be able to attend. Unclear if Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation from Trump. According to reports he will not send an envoy to the inauguration because Russia’s nominee for Russian ambassador to the US — Alexander Darchiev, the head of the North American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry — has still not received approval from US authorities. #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy

The Trump’s White House is rolling out a new policy allowing opportunities for what they call “new media” outlets and content creators to request media credentials and to participate in the White House press briefings. If you’re a content creator you can apply here: wh.gov/newmedia In her first briefing, incoming White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump is ready to retool the administration around “the new media landscape.” She said: “It’s essential to our team that we share President Trump’s message everywhere.” “In keeping with this revolutionary media approach that President Trump deployed during the campaign, the Trump White House will speak to all media outlets and personalities, not just the legacy media, who are seated in this room,” Leavitt announced. “We welcome independent journalists, podcasters and social media influencers,”she said, adding that the White House would also reinstate the press privileges of dozens of outlets that were “wrongly revoked by the previous administration,” including roughly 440 journalists. She pointed out that the seats in the briefing room previously occupied by White House staff would be filled by members of the new media and get to ask the first question, which today went to Axios’s Mike Allen and Breitbart’s Matt Boyle. “As long as you are creating news content of the day and are a legitimate independent journalist you are welcome to cover this White House,” she added. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy

Asked by reporters on the sidelines of a campaign event, he responded in English: “I disagree completely with Elon Musk and what he’s doing […] intervening in favor of right-wing politicians all over Europe. And this is really disgusting and it is not good for the democratic development in all (of) the European Union.” Earlier in January, Musk — a tech billionaire and closed ally to US President Donald Trump — used is X platform to converse with the leader of the AfD, Alice Weidel, regularly posted about his support for her radical party, and called Chancellor Scholz “an incompetent fool.” Last weekend, Musk appeared virtually at an AfD campaign rally in Halle, Germany and said Germans need to move on from its historic guilt over the Holocaust — that is the same week that the world commemorated the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. “This is why I’m so angry about Elon Musk,” Scholz told reporters. “This is the historic responsibility we will continue to take in the future.” In the meantime, AfD’s leaders are rejoicing about Musk’s public support. Weidel told reporters: “I wish him [Musk], Donald Trump, and JD Vance all the best, god blessings.” #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy

“So last night, over dinner, I told my kids about the decision I’m sharing with you today: I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister.” I’m trying to picture Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada sitting at the kitchen table with his three kids, Xavier Trudeau, Ella-Grace Trudeau, and Hadrien Trudeau. It must have been emotional. Just like emotional was his resignation speech yesterday, in front of Rideau Cottage, his official residence in Ottawa. The political levers he has pulled will give Trudeau’s Liberal Party a chance to reinvent itself without him — a deeply unpopular Prime Minister at home, but quite popular abroad. But they will also leave Canada weakened as the country’s braces for US President-elect Donald Trump, who has already announced steep tariffs against its two neighbors, Canada and Mexico. This appears to be a gamble that Prime Minister Trudeau is willing to take. It’s the end of a 9-year stint in office, as pressure grew from within his Liberal Party, trailing significantly behind the opposition Conservative Party in the polls. In just two weeks, when Trump returns to the Oval Office, Trudeau will be leading Canada as a lame duck, weakening the country’s hand in crucial negotiations with its closest ally. He will also lead the G7 as the lame duck chair of the powerful group of countries — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, US, European Union — taking over from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, G7 chair for 2024. Trump seems to celebrate the departure of Trudeau: “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” Former Canada resident and Trump’s top advisor Elon Musk, who is a naturalized Canadian citizen, has shared his jubilation as well and commented, “2025 is looking good.” Musk has been using his X platform to go against several world leaders, including Canada’s Justin Trudeau. He also having a spat with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and he has recently meddled in Italian internal affairs in support of Prime Minister Meloni — forcing Italian President Sergio Mattarella to issue a statement to push back against Musk. #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy

Will TikTok live? It’s not that simple… And it seems to be an uphill battle. Yes, before his inauguration (today), US Donald Trump has pledged to save TikTok. He did so many times. And after TikTok went dark for a few hours Friday into Saturday, and later came back live again, Trump said last night: “As of today, TikTok is back. […] I live TikTok.” Following a decision by the US Supreme Court to uphold the TikTok ban, US President Joe Biden commented: “The decision is going to be made by the next president anyway.” Biden did not formally invoke a 90-day delay in the deadline as allowed by the law, TikTok decided to shut down the app in the US, and the app was taken down from the Apple and Google app stores. Will Trump save TikTok? Unclear — and unclear how. Trump might sign a 90 day extension of the TikTok ban. But what will happen after? Trump suggested yesterday: “I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to stay up. Without US approval, there is no Tik Tok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars — maybe trillions.” TikTok stated: “We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. […] We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.” #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy
