On Monday, two dogs were electrocuted on a Washington, DC sidewalk. A few months ago we shared similar stories of the same fate happening to dogs here in NYC. Reading through the comments it became clear that this is not that uncommon - many dog owners have experienced stray voltage firsthand. Usually the shocks are not strong enough to be fatal, but it’s not a risk I am willing to take. We live in NYC and stray voltage has been found on our street and near our local dog park. We help protect Winston with his Air Pup dog shoes and boots on all our city walks due to all the dangers - broken glass, hot pavement, ice salt, needles, chemicals, fecal bacteria, etc. - it’s crazy that stray voltage can be added to this list. We tested Winston’s Air Pups with stray voltage in a reel posted on 8/31. We cannot speak for all brands of dog shoes, but the electrical current did not pass through Air Pup dog shoes due to the rubber sole. Unfortunately there is no easy fix for stray voltage. There are cases going back decades where both people and pets have been fatally shocked. When stray voltage is found it is fixed but the problem is our pets may find it before the electrical companies do. . . .
