#duet with @TheConsciousVet Let’s bust some myths regarding bird sedation! 🦜 If you talk to enough parrot owners on social media, you’ll find that many have heard horror stories of people losing their bird while under sedation or anesthesia. While these are tragic circumstances that can occasionally happen, we shouldn’t automatically demonize sedation and anesthesia as these are useful tools in veterinary medicine. In the hands of well-trained professionals, risks can certainly be minimized. Even more, many procedures are much safer WITH sedation. I’ve seen birds that broke their own limbs after another vet refused to use sedation while taking x-rays. I’ve seen birds die due to the stress of handling. Not to mention, we should be striving for “fear-free” visits, and a small amount of sedation in some cases can certainly help facilitate a much more pleasant experience for the parrot. Is your patient hard to bleed? Have you struggled to get a blood sample with the traditional needle/syringe option? 💉🩸 Our VETgirl Tech Tip: Try using a butterfly catheter!! They help minimize the amount of suction placed directly on the vessel compared to the syringe/needle option.
