Eastenders really bringing in the christmas spirit this year hell yeah! #whoisuzo #eastenders #christmas
I’ve been watching eastenders this past year while I work. I know lots of you are not from the uk, so you might not know what Eastenders is! So for those of you I unacquainted : it’s a serial drama or soap. We get 4 episodes a week. It’s about a group of neighbours all living on a square in London. As of February this year, it’s been running for 40 years. Lots of us in the UK have been watching since we were kids, and some of the characters are still on the show now. It’s camp, hilarious, dramatic, entertaining and sometimes quite hard hitting. I used to watch after school when I was young, and took a hiatus until last year. I was scrolling through tik tok and saw a scene between two characters. One woman making a declaration of love to another woman. I thought “that’s really sweet.. where can I watch this?” I couldn’t believe that it was Eastenders. So I started watching again. I was introduced to Suki. Punjabi Sikh. Business woman. A villainous character. Homophobic to her daughter. Manipulative, cruel. She put survival above everything. Then Eve comes along. Just out of prison. A retired lawyer who now works on a bap van. Funny, soft and smart. We watched them dance around in circles for a long while. Almost in real time, viewers got to watch eve pull down Suki’s walls one by one. We’ve seen so many sides of this one character. As lesbians, we know what it’s like to see ourselves on screen and consistently be shown to suffer and die. It means that some of us grow up thinking that if we live as ourselves, that those stories will become our own. It can make you afraid to be happy. I’m sharing this today because they got married last night! And it’s groundbreaking because it’s the first successful lesbian wedding on soap! Stories like this are a step in the right direction, because we can be happy and be ourselves at the same time. it’s quite genuinely incredible to see such effort put into creating layered, dynamic queer characters on tv. I’ve caught myself laughing, crying and gasping at this storyline. I even found moments to make some little drawings. Here are some fun drawings I made inspired by it all! #eastenders #sukeve
