Things to consider BEFORE you bring home egg laying hens: 1. Their protection should be priority
#1. Everything will try to eat them. Never use chicken wire, when building your coop. Only use 1/4" hardware cloth. 2. Never use artificial heat or light. They will self acclimate to the weather. Offer them shade in the summer and a dry, breeze/wind free area to sleep during the winter. 3. Chicken coops are expensive, poorly made, and entirely too small. We got creative and made ours out of a plastic playhouse we bought for $50 on FB marketplace. We then put the playhouse in a 6x12 fenced kennel. Here’s what we did that works for us. 4. If you get this far and want to know more, let me know. I'm happy to talk chickens anytime.
