Pocha has been gone now for 2 years, but her legacy as a mother will forever be interwoven into the essence of our nonprofit. Her story is unique not only because of the extremely isolating and sterile condition of her former enclosure, but also because she carried the additional pain of witnessing her child grow up in those conditions. Pocha gave birth to Guillermina in this space that they would then share for 24 years. Aggression between calves and their mothers in the wild is not seen. But in captive situations, elephants can develop abnormal behaviors in response to the stress or to protect their minds and bodies. In our latest podcast episode, Scott and Kat give us their thoughts on how they think Guillermina walked away from that past with only relatively small behavioral consequences. Itβs possible that Pocha was allowing Guille to unload her emotional and mental burden to spare her from further damage.
