Before being a Producer, Engineer and a studio owner… I was just an MC writing recording and performing. Hip-hop is and will forever be the roots of Baker Act Music. This is the third track off the new “Terms And Conditions” album called “Sleep”. . . . . #mystudioflow #musicproducer #musicproduction #singersongwriter #newmusic #floridasingers #floridamusic #floridamusicians #makingmusic #makingsongs #bakeractmusic #musicvideoproduction #musicvideo #musicproducer #artistproducer #artistproducerengineer #hiphop #emcee #emceelife #emceeing #hiphopheads #hiphopmusic #dontoverthink #dontoverthinkit #crossovermusic
The Streaming Era (The SoundCloud Era was more mainstream, but less innovative to me) • • • Some Supplementary Notes: During an era where a lot of people began to sound the same, Lil Dicky not only gave us BARS, but a level of authenticity that I don’t think any of us has ever really seen. In addition to literally going against the norm in Hip Hop telling us to save money instead of flexing it. He also brought literal (comedy) punchlines to rap, definitely a breath of fresh air amidst the monotony. JME & Skepta are two of UK’s Grime founders, really helping pave the way for the UK rappers to come. Shout out to A$AP for helping bridge that gap, featuring him on “Praise The Lord”. Noname is top 3, only preceded (to me) by Lauryn Hill & Left Eye. Her cadence, flow, singsongy rap style, conscious & brilliant lyricism—she really is HER. Do yourself a favor and bump “Telefone” front to back. Anderson is a bit of an anamoly, you can catch him singing his tail off next to Bruno while playing the drums one day—then going bar for bar with Cordae/winning a Grammy for a Rap song the next. Nonetheless his ability to blend those melodies into his rap verses, his storytelling & lyricism place him right up here with the best of them. Smino is similar to .Paak, as you’ll typically find him singing. But those melodies blend right into his flows & rap cadences. Amongst the auto tune army that formed during the SoundCloud era, these guys let us know the mic was ON & that they were BARRED up! Not much to say about J.I.D. aside from him probably being the best spitter of the next generation right now. The “DiCaprio” projects speak for themselves. Kota makes the cut because he promotes self love & growth in his music—in addition to speaking often on mental health, things we don’t typically see in Hip Hop. Aminé, amongst this wave of “Feel Good Rap”, stands out because of his ability to stay grounded—speaking on Black issues, incorporating elements of Black culture into his music, & showcasing his lyrical capabilities all while doing so. #50YearsOfHipHop #HipHop #HipHopHistory #Rap #Rapper #Rapping #MC #MCing #Emcee #Emceeing #slimdawit

The Streaming Era II • • • Bas is another front runner for Dreamville & has shown time & again that he’s barred up. His lyricism helps him easily navigate the stories he tells through his songs & he gives melodic punches like “The Jackie.” JPEGMAFIA might be top of the list of the new school for innovation. We haven’t seen a diversion from the normal mainstream sound this drastic since… maybe Odd Future, & in the same way his lyrical capabilities show he’s keen on advancing the culture. Saba belongs right in the triad of Noname & Smino—it’s why they formed Ghetto Sage together. Lyrically superior, conscious content, with easy transitions between bars & melodies. Dave East brought us that nostalgic gritty NY feel from the 90s (Nas approved) & keeps it street, sharing what he’s learned from his endeavors. Vado served as a bridge between that time in Hip Hop to now with artists like Dave East. Roddy could be categorized with the other SoundCloud/Auto Tune guys but his message separates him. He speaks on the streets in past tense. He doesn’t rap for the clout, but raps about a life he’s actually lived as a safer means to get to a bag. I’m certain because you don’t get a Nipsey or Kendrick co-sign being a clout chaser. He also had mega stars publicly asking for streams while “The Box” was on it’s legendary run. Cardi shattered records with “Invasion of Privacy” & was the next huge female rapper since Nicki. Her mass appeal and gritty NY style helped open the doors for the era of woman in rap that was to follow. Nipsey always kept it real & kept it street. He was always about sticking to the code, giving back to your community, & being of & for the people. That, along with looking at life as a marathon will forever be his legacy. #50YearsOfHipHop #HipHop #HipHopHistory #Rap #Rapper #Rapping #MC #MCing #Emcee #Emceeing #slimdawit

Part 27: The Streaming Era IV/ Age of Woman II • • • Some Supplemental Notes: Joyner’s a bridge from old to new school. Pays his dues, speaks on pertinent issues, uses his fire flows to deliver them, & (to me) brought Will Smith back to rap! Through his lyricism and flow, Cordae proved to be a leader of the new school. I’m excited to see his continued growth. Little Simz is another one of them ones. Front to back, her projects are incredible, and she’s another leading force in this wave of women in rap. TDE never misses, & Isaiah Rashad is no exception. From his pure artistry & pen, to the content at the focal point of his music, he isn’t one to slept on. While Doja has aligned herself as a pop star, she’s a SPITTA. Honestly, if I had to compare myself to anyone, it’d probably be her. Lil Nas X did the unthinkable, in a historically homophonic genre, he created smash after smash hit being openly gay. He also blended Country & Hip Hop, while breaking records staying at #1. All impressive feats. In a historically misogynistic & fatphobic culture, Lizzo demanded & received respect for body positivity. She became a mega star while flexing her vocals, flows, & flutability! Impressive feats as well. Vince gives it to the people straight & isn’t for all the politicking, a real one. He showed us a successful career without needing the limelight (all sync placements), approaching music differently (sonically & financially). Freddie is another guy that has bent the genre to fit his own style, is lyrically gifted, & has shown his versatility through his vast list of collaborators. What isn’t there to say about Doechii. She’s IT rn. I prefer the “reformed” Durk over his drill pioneer days. It’s worth noting that he was melodic rapping in ‘12 before most—and his relevance & respect within Hip Hop should speak for itself. #50YearsOfHipHop #HipHop #HipHopHistory #Rap #Rapper #Rapping #MC #MCing #Emcee #Emceeing #slimdawit
