Part 27: The Streaming Era IV/ Age of Woman II • • • Some Supplemental Notes: Joyner’s a bridge from old to new school. Pays his dues, speaks on pertinent issues, uses his fire flows to deliver them, & (to me) brought Will Smith back to rap! Through his lyricism and flow, Cordae proved to be a leader of the new school. I’m excited to see his continued growth. Little Simz is another one of them ones. Front to back, her projects are incredible, and she’s another leading force in this wave of women in rap. TDE never misses, & Isaiah Rashad is no exception. From his pure artistry & pen, to the content at the focal point of his music, he isn’t one to slept on. While Doja has aligned herself as a pop star, she’s a SPITTA. Honestly, if I had to compare myself to anyone, it’d probably be her. Lil Nas X did the unthinkable, in a historically homophonic genre, he created smash after smash hit being openly gay. He also blended Country & Hip Hop, while breaking records staying at
#1. All impressive feats. In a historically misogynistic & fatphobic culture, Lizzo demanded & received respect for body positivity. She became a mega star while flexing her vocals, flows, & flutability! Impressive feats as well. Vince gives it to the people straight & isn’t for all the politicking, a real one. He showed us a successful career without needing the limelight (all sync placements), approaching music differently (sonically & financially). Freddie is another guy that has bent the genre to fit his own style, is lyrically gifted, & has shown his versatility through his vast list of collaborators. What isn’t there to say about Doechii. She’s IT rn. I prefer the “reformed” Durk over his drill pioneer days. It’s worth noting that he was melodic rapping in ‘12 before most—and his relevance & respect within Hip Hop should speak for itself.
