Five new hydrothermal vents and a never before seen lava lake (since cooled and solidified into mid ocean ridge basalt) was discovered by the scientists and crew on the #EPRlavawatch cruise this past February and March- it was such an incredible honor to be a part of this amazing research expedition and I’m so genuinely proud of playing a part in sharing the work being done by these incredible people. When working together so many new discoveries are possible and this cruise showed how much can be accomplished! Come explore the East Pacific Rise! This is a region of the earth where two tectonic plates are diverging, allowing volcanoes to form along the plate boundary. The heat from these volcanoes allows the formation of incredible hydrothermal vent colonies like those seen here!
