This month the Alvin Submerisble celebrated its 60th anniversary this past summer! Its recieved many upgrades over the years but in its essence is the same sub thats been inspiring and facilitating new discoveries for over half a century now. Five new hydrothermal vents and a never before seen lava lake (since cooled and solidified into mid ocean ridge basalt) was discovered by the scientists and crew on the #EPRlavawatch cruise this past February and March- it was such an incredible honor to be a part of this amazing research expedition and I’m so genuinely proud of playing a part in sharing the work being done by these incredible people. When working together so many new discoveries are possible and this cruise showed how much can be accomplished! I made a short film about how the scientists I sailed with on an ocean expedition took 16,000 samples of ocean rock in one week! The research conducted using the cores we took at sea will be used for decades. And I met back up with the scientists I sailed with in Germany months where they get pieces of the rock to bring back to their labs. It was amazing to see everyone again and film the whole experience.
