And to the parents who are worried that their child is “selfish,” “spoiled,” “lacks empathy,” etc. — it is of course super important to support your child in taking others’ perspectives, empathizing, “mentalizing” (psychology term from the UK) and being psychologically flexible — AND! That support should be coming from a place of centering the child’s needs for psychological growth rather than your need for reassurance that you’re raising them right, a “good” parent, etc. I also want to highlight that not turning to your child for reassurance about your parental identity will ultimately protect you. You’re putting your emotional stability into the hands of a 12 year old. Or a 20 year old. Don’t do that!!!! Turn to Trusted Others who are committed to grounding you.
