Tomiris (circa 570-520 BC) was a Scythian queen of the Massagetes. According to Herodotus, Tomiris was born into the family of King Spargapis. His wife died in childbirth, and the girl's upbringing fell entirely on the shoulders of a man. He raised his daughter to be a skilled warrior and a worthy heiress. Tomiris was distinguished by her sharp mind, strong will, and natural attractiveness. She was a desirable bride for the Massagetian warriors, but she chose as her husband Rustam, the son of the king of the allied Tigrahaud tribe Kavada. Together with the Tigrahaud heir, Tomiris ruled Massagetae after his father's death. Her husband was a strong warrior, but he did not share Tomiris' ambitions, drowned in idleness, revelry, and hindered the Massagetian warrior more than he supported her. It was only after his death that she was able to fully realize her ambitions, create a powerful army and defeat King Cyrus the Great, who was eager to seize new territories. According to legend, Tomiris ordered the beheading of the defeated king. The warrior threw Cyrus' head into a skin of human blood with the words "You were thirsty for blood, king of the Persians, so drink it to your heart's content now!" The fate and circumstances of Tomiris' death are unknown. #scythian #ossetian #alanogoths #eurasian #alans #indoeuropean
