Most Black men I know don’t get complimented or affirmed enough — if that’s you, try seeking it out in a healthy way. Have meaningful conversations where you ask for positive feedback on something you’re doing. You might not think you need recognition until you receive it and realize how much it helps you mentally. It’s okay to admit that you want to be seen and appreciated by the people around you — it doesn’t make you less of a man, it makes you human. In XYBM 115, I sit down with Joél Leon, a performer, storyteller, and author, to discuss the complexities of masculinity in today’s society. We explore Joél’s personal experiences growing up in a dangerous neighborhood, the societal pressures he faced as a young man, and how these challenges intersect with body dysmorphia and the Body Positivity movement. Don’t make grinding through your problems your default response to dealing with trauma. As Black men, it’s easy to fall into this mindset because of everything we face, but eventually, it will catch up with you. There will be moments when you can’t stop and address what you’re going through, forcing you to have to grind it out. But those are the moments when it’s even more important to intentionally find time later to process what you had to push aside. Making time for your healing is extremely important because it prevents long-term burnout and depression, which often result from the emotional suppression we sometimes default to as Black men. In XYBM 122, I sit down with Roderick Smith, the Director of Fayetteville State University's Male Matriculation Institute). We speak about the challenges universities have retaining Black men — which is one of the main concerns for universities that partner with us. We discuss why men can be disengaged on campus, the fear they have of self-expression, the importance of community and being able to healthily disagree with each other and much more. Every Black man needs a space to decompress. We have so many responsibilities and so many people depending on us that not having a space to decompress can lead to burn out. Personally, I try to take one day out the week for just myself (normally on the weekend). My therapist used to tell me when stress increases, so should self-care. Black man, take care of yourself. Looking to increase Black male retention at your university? Partner with us. Hit the 🔗 in our bio. This was a really dope conversation we had after our workshop at @FayettevilleState with the Black men that attended. I remember being in college and wanting a mentor, but also not trusting people. I also had A LOT of pride and ego that made me extremely uncomfortable with the idea of having another man that wasn’t family helping me. If you feel the same, I want you to know your feelings are valid. But it’s important to push past those feelings and find someone you can trust to learn from. Having a mentor can save you years and help you move much quicker toward your goals than trying to navigate everything on your own.
