#eyeallergies: Red, itchy, watery eyes plague sufferers. Pollen, dust, and pets trigger discomfort, leading to blurry vision. Relief sought through drops, remedies, and shared experiences.
I’m a reformed eye rubber. There I said it. Nothing feels better to my allergy eyes than rubbing them. Especially a good knuckle rub. But, here’s what it looks like when you rub your eyes. It’s pretty crazy! Short term eye rubbing is not a real issue. But chronic rubbing can cause problems. Here’s why it’s not great. 1. Misshapes the cornea - Chronic eye rubbing can result in the weakening of the cornea and distortion of the cornea called keratoconus. 2. Sets up an inflammatory cascade - Rubbing your eyes releases histamine which causes itching. So even though it feels awesome in the short term, you’ll soon experience worse discomfort because more histamine has been released. 3. Foreign body - It’s possible to get something in your eye when rubbing it. This can cause abrasions on your cornea or get trapped underneath the eyelid. 4. Cosmetic - Honestly, itmakes your eye skin crepey, and dark. The tiny blood vessels under the eyes break from rubbing, resulting in blood-shot eyes and those dark, unsightly circles that everyone is always trying to avoid. What you should do instead: 1. Hot compresses - if your itching is from blocked oil glands, than a hot compresses will hep release the oil and lubricate the eyes (the same way that rubbing does), making them feel better 2. Use an anti-allergy eye drop - These are available without a prescription. Examples include Pataday, Patanol or olopatadine (generic name). These are NOT steroid eye drops 3. Make sure to clean your lashes well, which helps unblock them, targeting blepharitis another cause for itching. Want more tips on eye allergies?
