I met my younger self for coffee this morning. She showed up 10 minutes early and waited anxiously in her car. I was a few minutes late after dropping the kids off at their grandma’s house. She ordered an herbal tea. I ordered a latte with oat milk. She was wearing her garments. I wasn’t. She told me she didn’t know what she wanted to do with her life. I told her I’ve found my passion—helping people rebuild after leaving a high-demand religion. She couldn’t make sense of the god she’d been taught. I told her she didn’t have to. She said bull crap. I said bullshit. She said she couldn’t imagine a life without Mormonism. Really though, a huge theme of my ~reconstruction journey~ has been realizing that sometimes the choices I make are just as influenced by my upbringing—but in rebellion against it. After leaving a high-demand religion, it can feel like your life’s mission is to prove it wrong by becoming everything it told you you couldn’t be. I’m working on being more self-aware about the motivations behind my choices and relearning how to make decisions that are truly for me. The decision to wear short shorts and get a coffee on a Sunday morning? With all the comments, DMs, and even emails (yes, emails) I’ve gotten since one of my videos hit the Christian algorithm—of people telling me why I should be Christian—I’ve been thinking a lot about how flawed it is to judge someone’s morality or character based on their religion. Any belief system should foster more love and acceptance for those who think differently. At its worst, though, it creates division and judgment.
