This song, “Katey Cruel” which originally comes from Scotland, is told from the perspective of a s-x worker who, in many versions, is following an army infantry for her work. The lyrics of this folk song (which you’ll learn if you join my course) depict her sense of independence, her pursuit of the one she loves, and the ironies of how she’s treated by the clients she soothes. This coming year, with everything that’s changing politically, we’ll need songs to embolden and reassure us as we combat sexism and threats to the rights of many. Start off 2025 with my course “Badass Women in Folk Song!” This is a 6 week course that you can take virtually (or locally if you’re in western NC)! In our time together, we’ll learn a one-of-a-kind collection of ballads and songs about witches, warriors and triumphant women from Scotland, England and Appalachia. We’ll also get to explore what these songs have to teach us about women’s historic tactics of resistance, and enjoy writing our own songs using traditional tunes and techniques. You’ll also get loads of materials- recorded songs, historic lectures, YouTube playlists and more! With the dire times we’re in, Badass Women is intended to be a balm to carry you through the winter and beyond! We start in two weeks- check out the schedule and regis ter using the link in my bi o! #scottishfolksong #feministtok #folktok #womenswisdom #matriarchy #hermusic #womeninmusic #womenempowerment #womenoffolk #womensstruggles #womensrights #womenshistory #feministhistory #divinefeminine #reproductiverights #feministmusic #bard #medievalwomen #folksongs #abortionrights #righttochoose #transhistory
