Between 2023 and 2024, the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game shot and killed 179 brown bears from helicopters. Its stated goal? Increasing caribou and moose populations. But wildlife advocates say there’s no evidence this practice is effective. “There is no scientific evidence that this carnage will boost populations of moose and caribou,” Rick Steiner, a former University of Alaska-Fairbanks ecologist, tells The Guardian. This year, the program is making a comeback. Zac Mills, a wildlife photographer who has spent years guiding people through Alaska’s wilderness, is petitioning Alaska’s Fish and Game Dept. to stop the aerial slaughter of bears and wolves.
