One of our Manx fosters, Gemelli, has struggled with digestive issues for the majority of her life. She’s been on probiotics, antibiotics, and still she struggled, never receiving a clear answer as to why.
On New Year’s Day 2024, I discovered Gemelli had developed severe diarrhea and was quite dehydrated, prompting a trip to the vet that resulted in her being admitted for 3 days. They gave her the usual regimen of anti- and probiotics, and cultured her stool (finding nothing). The conclusion was it was “viral”, even though none of the other fosters were even slightly sick. However, a few months later we got a bag of food that caused everyone in the foster room to get sick (*cough cough, Purina*), and I decided 2 things: I would never have that food in my house again, and I needed a better solution for Gemelli. We tried grain-free, then chicken-free, with little change. I joined some cat nutrition groups on fb, and learned about feeding raw and the benefits it can have on sensitive digestive tracts. Armed with this knowledge, I decided to give it a try!
Raw diets can be overwhelming to newbies, but there is a “cheat” to make it simple: use a completer powder! With working full-time as a pet groomer, caring for my family and pets in addition to our fosters, you can imagine how my time is precious. I don’t have the energy or bandwidth to be grinding bones or chopping up organs. But I can add water and powder to some ground meat, and that’s what I do. I use EZ Complete powder, my ground meat of choice, and a silicone muffin pan to freeze the food into portions before transferring to an airtight, freezer-safe container. You can either pull out your food the night before to defrost in the fridge, or if you’re like me and always forget plan ahead, you can defrost your meal in the microwave (but do not cook!!)
I rotate through chicken, turkey, beef and venison for my protein options, opting for higher fat percentages on the beef. Rotating proteins ensures a healthy diet, and after all, variety is the spice of life!
Gemelli absolutely LOVES her food, and her belly has never been happier, which makes me thrilled beyond belief. Her coat is finally shiny and growing nicely, and her bum is no longer sore or messy. Now, to get her adopted in 2025!
