I’m always impressed by how hounds can sort of “chain” actions to communicate. It’s not just that he wanted to comfortably lay in the sun - it’s that he wanted to lay comfortably in the sun > knew what object would allow him to do that > thought about how to tell me what he wanted > stood by object to get my attention > walked over to where he wanted it so I would know where to put it. That’s a lot of thinking!! Hounds have a reputation for being dumb but they are actually one of the smartest types of dogs, and they are great communicators if you know how to listen.
