Antenna on its head—trying to receive signals from alien birds? The Gambel's Quail (Callipepla gambelii) is a small, ground-dwelling bird native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Known for its distinctive teardrop-shaped topknot plume, this quail has a gray body, chestnut flanks, and a scaly-patterned belly. Males are more vibrant, with a black face and throat bordered by white. They thrive in arid desert habitats, often seen foraging in groups called coveys. Primarily herbivores, they feed on seeds, leaves, and berries. Famous for their quick, running movements, Gambel's Quails prefer fleeing on foot over flying when threatened.
