People in Gaza have flooded the streets after news broke of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Israel’s security cabinet has ratified the deal, making it official. A three-phased plan, the deal starts with the return of 33 hostages — mainly women, children, the injured and the elderly — captured on Oct. 7, 2023. This phase is scheduled to take about six weeks. Then, Israel will release some Palestinian prisoners and start withdrawing troops from parts of the Gaza Strip, and aid will start to flow into the enclave. One woman on the ground in Gaza described feeling mixed emotions: “I am sure to feel partly happy rather than complete happiness, because in the end, as I am coming out of a war, it did not allow me to be very happy at the time,” she said. Meanwhile, as the ceasefire news broke, protesters in Tel Aviv were outside demanding the release of the hostages. Feelings about the deal there are mixed, but the priority is still to ensure all of the hostages actually return home. Israel and Hamas still have to negotiate next steps for returning more hostages and prisoners, and decide where Israeli forces will be stationed and who will govern Gaza. It’s also unclear whether this ceasefire will be permanent, but in the meantime, Israeli forces have continued to attack Gaza. The deal is scheduled to begin Sunday. 🎧 Click the link in bio to hear The World’s coverage of the latest 📸 Videos by AP and Mohamed El Saife for The World 🎙️ Voiced by The World’s Shirin Jaafari @GBH
