😮 What if your student has trouble filling in the bar model… Bar models are a great tool for solving word problems, but what if your child isn’t sure how to fill in the numbers?? 🌟 First, I would remove the numbers from the problem. Have them visualize the story, and make sure they understand the situation. 🌟 Then, replace the numbers in the problem with much smaller numbers. “Ellie ate 2 peanuts, she has 3 left in the bucket. How many did she start with?” You can even pull out physical objects and have them act out the problem. I find that when we discuss the problem together using small numbers, most people are able to see how the numbers relate to each other. 🌟 Then they are ready to go back to the original problem with the larger numbers. If they get stuck along the way, I remind them of how we did the problem when there were only 2 and 3 peanuts. Also, remember to look for situations in your every day life that you can highlight with your child. When they have many opportunities to think about part-part-whole relationships, it will become more natural to apply that in math class! What other type of word problems would you like to see worked out? Let me know in the comments!
