One of the most common questions we get asked is, "Do we get to keep it if we find something rare?" Our answer is simple: 99% of what you discover with us is not considered rare, and the 1% that might be classified as rare will be preserved for public retention, ensuring that the world can study and learn from it. This dedication to contributing to science is something most of our clients deeply understand and appreciate. Weâre often asked about the possibility of finding rare specimens, and we want to make it clear that if something truly monumental were to be discovered, it would already be in the hands of professionals long before you ever reached commercial quarries. In over 50 years of operation, no one has ever found a crocodile or a large turtle that they could keepâthis idea is more of a marketing illusion. Having run a commercial quarry ourselves for many years, we know this well. Now, weâre excited to focus on the future of paleontology and collaborate with the scientific community. This year, weâve made some significant strides, including providing specimens like a bat, a bird, and a salamander to the state of Wyoming for public retention. These contributions are a part of preserving the scientific record for future generations. One of our proudest moments this year was when a bird specimen was discovered by a tourist group. As we approach the final stages of reassembling this crocodile from the Green River Formation, things are becoming increasingly complex. Our goal is to keep it in its original context, unlike many other specimens from the formation that have been removed or altered. One of the key reasons for this is the immense value of the surrounding matrix, which offers a snapshot of the environment at that time. Alongside the crocodile, we have uncovered numerous species of fish, insects, a feather, identifiable plant material, and even a stingray, though unfortunately, it was found on top of the crocodile. These discoveries provide invaluable insights into the preservation of this specimen. Interestingly, there is a faint palm flower that may extend off the side of the crocodile, though we have yet to reach that stage in the preparation process. Weâve been asked why this work has taken so long. The truth is, we are a small, family-run business independent of the large commercial fossil companies that often have the backing of investors. These companies may ultimately dominate the field, but we are committed to preserving the integrity of paleontology, despite the challenges posed by profit-driven entities. However, when they are found in the Eighteen Inch Layer horizon, they are exceptionally rareâoften with only one or two specimens unearthed annually. The preparation process for these fossils is both unique and intricate, requiring the use of surgical microscopes and hours of focused, meticulous work by skilled preparators.
