If TikTok is going down I’m going down with it. Did you know this about grow bags? The majority of the ones on the market are made of plastic fiber (even though they’re called “felt” or “fabric.” Fabrics are even worse than solid plastic in terms of leaching microplastics, and this is especially true for recycled PET, due to the fragility of the fibers after the recycling process. While plastic recycling can seem from first glance like it’s a beneficial process, the reality is darker: not only can recycled plastic contain significantly higher levels of toxic chemicals, it also leaches more microplastics into the water supply. In the context of grow bags and gardening this is particularly troubling as those microplastics slough off into the soil, especially in the presence of heat, UV rays, and moisture: making growing in the sun in a black plastic grow bag a recipe for high levels of microplastic contamination into soils. Those microplastics have a significant effect on the soil food web, hindering its ability to properly function and remaining there for our lifetimes. PLEASE share this reel for more awareness of microplastic contamination from what we’ve been told is “fabric.” Alternatives include hemp, wool, burlap, or cotton canvas (which yea, break down faster, but also won’t leave our planet with soils full of plastic). Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Remember to SHARE.
