Misinformation has no place in our society, especially when it comes from someone aspiring to be the future president of the United States. Donald J. Trump has a history of making misleading claims, and unfortunately, many of his supporters take his words at face value. Let’s set the record straight: the recent tragic event in New Orleans was not committed by an immigrant. In fact, most immigrants are not violent. The data consistently shows that the majority of mass crimes, including mass shootings and serial killings, in the United States are committed by white men. However, in this case, the perpetrator was not white—he was an American citizen from Texas who legally owned a firearm. What stands out here is his service: he was a veteran, having served in the military for 10 years. This raises a critical question we must address as a society: how did we fail him? Far too many veterans return home with untreated mental health challenges. Instead of allowing this tragedy to fuel fear or misinformation, we should focus on improving mental health support for those who have served our country. Let’s shift the narrative from divisive rhetoric to meaningful solutions.
