🎉 The year of the chunky granny square 👏🏼 What’s crazy is that at this time last year, I wasn’t even working with chenille yarn 🤯 I first began experimenting with it as dog fur for my jumbo pet stuffies, but once I made my first granny square, I knew chenille yarn was the way to go. I have seriously been blown away by the growth and support these squares have brought Stay Cozy, and I’m incredibly grateful. Not only have I gotten to expand my skill set, but I’ve also opened a new door for my business. Before this year, every tutorial I had ever shared was FREE. This is obviously amazing for everyone who has used them and learned from them, and it was super great practice for me learning how to share my knowledge through video the last 6 years. But it was time to start charging (a bit) for my expertise. Don’t worry, I still share a LOT of free content and my YouTube channel is full of videos from the past 6 years, but I also plan to continue making and selling new designs! I have a lot of ideas, and I’ve done this long enough to know they won’t all come to life in 2025 🙃 but I also know I will keep doing what I can do and sharing what I learn along the way. Chenille yarn was the simple and obvious option. A lot of people have used chenille yarn for hand knitting, but I always resisted. I loved tube yarn and felt it set my creations and art apart. But it had its limits. Tube yarn was perfect for shape and structure, but it lacked the texture needed to really bring my stuffies to life. When I started working with chenille yarn, it was a bit of a learning curve, but I quickly came to appreciate its fluffiness, ease of use, and accessibility for purchasing. When I began my granny square journey and chenille yarn was the better option for hand crocheting, there was no turning back. Since then I have bought and used a LOT of chenille yarn, and I’ve also started selling it to all of you! It’s fun to have another chunky yarn in the mix and to diversify my product offerings. Chenille yarn also opened a bigger market for teaching classes. With its lower price point and faster turn around time in my supply chain, it allowed me to teach more classes, more frequently. Long story short, I owe much of 2024 to chenille yarn! 2024 was a big shift… I knew I wanted to make more tutorials and start selling them, but I also knew I couldn’t keep pushing custom orders at the same time. Some people may be able to do a lot at once, but I’ve learned that I’m best when I focus on one thing at a time. I’ve also been prone to burnout in the past, so I find I’m protective of myself and my family when thinking about my capacity for the year. I still took orders, but it was way less than the year before. I’m one person with a limited amount of time and energy, and I have a hard time shifting gears. So I slowed down in one area to make room for another. It’s been such a good shift. Without the constant physical labor of making, I was able to do more mental labor through pattern design, content creation, and tutorial production. I also had more flexibility in my schedule and released the guilt of “not doing enough”. So here’s to 2025.
