Honoring and celebrating our Afro-Latino primas, primos, and primes during Black History Month is essential, as it allows their voices, stories, and contributions to shine even brighter! It’s also a time to educate ourselves on the deep African roots within Latin American culture and acknowledge that Latino identity is not limited to Spanish-speaking countries. Haiti, the first independent Black republic, played a crucial role in the liberation of Latin America and shares historical, cultural, and linguistic ties with the region. While French and Haitian Creole are the primary languages spoken, Haiti is geographically, historically, and culturally connected to Latin America, making Haitians part of the Latino community. Recognizing Afro-Latinos, including our Haitian primos, strengthens our understanding of the full spectrum of Latinidad.
