Helen was rescued in May, becoming the first and youngest addition to the FCFS family in 2024. Understanding the depth of the life-long commitment we make to the residents, we have been cautious with intakes. We want to ensure we can not only provide the care each new animal requires for the rest of their life, but we also have to honor the commitment of care made to the existing residents. When we heard about Helen, we knew we couldn’t turn her away. At one month old, Helen was living just miles from the sanctuary and struggling to thrive. Born blind, we were told she nearly died after being in the sun for an extended period of time. Young Helen was unable to find her way back to the protection of the barn. Imagine this sweet innocent face, hot, confused and unable to find her mother or help?? We had to save Helen and we had to get her immediate medical attention. Helen was seen by the ophthalmologist at Auburn University. Helen gets eye drops twice a day, this will continue her whole life. If changes in her comfort occur, she will require more visits with the specialist and possible eye removal surgery. Once lost in an open pasture, without shelter or comfort, Helen now spends her days in safety. She lives alongside her friend Chino, who was also rescued this summer, sharing a pasture just outside the medical barn. We are at a crucial point in Helen’s journey. We need to ensure we can provide her care for many years to come. Helen has come so far and now lives safely with his BFF Chino! Helen and over 100 other residents like her get a second chance in life thanks to supporters like you. Your generosity enables us to not only fight for residents in our care, but to intake animals who have nowhere else to turn. They need someone to fight for them.
