Jakub Dobeš, one of Vechs’ guys, just made his NHL debut and here’s his call up: -AHL coaches play a prank on him telling him he’s being sent to the ECHL -Get a call from Martin St. Louis that he’s starting against the reigning Stanley Cup champs -Take rookie lap and miss the net on his first two shots -Pitch a shutout against the Florida Panthers for his first NHL win That’s a hell of a 24 hours. We had Dobey on our podcast (out tomorrow) to talk some hockey. 🎥: canadiensmtl #hockeypodcast #mtlcanadiens #jakubdobeš #jakubdobes #nhlcanadiens
It’s amazing how many professional players we’ve had on our podcast who were cut at some point in their youth hockey career. Getting cut a few times on my journey ended up being absolute blessings in disguise. It’s not what happens to us that’s most important. It’s how we choose to respond to what happens to us that’s most important. Here’s a story of the first time I got cut. Go listen to our latest Friday Faceoff episode for all about how to handle the player selection process 👉 #hockeypodcast #playerselection #youthhockeycoach #hockeytryouts
Unless it’s a 2013 Reebok Raffi Torres jersey it’s a little weird when you’re an adult. Link to YouTube in the bio @Settle Down #hockey #jerseys #jerseycollection #NHL #nhlpodcast #hockeypodcast #NHLFaceOff
Macklin Celebrini is just below a point per game in the NHL and he’s only 18!! Who is putting up the most impressive case for the Calder Trophy?? (Rookie of the year) @Settle Down #NHL #nhlhockey #hockeypodcast #hockey #macklincelebrini #sjsharks #sanjose
This week’s podcast guest Derek Stephens was not on the D1 hockey radar playing junior. But coaches who were coming to watch other players ended up liking the way Derek played, and at the end of the day, he ended up playing D1 at UCONN. For all the kids out there, if you have that dream but it’s not happening on your timeline, keep going. It took Derek until almost the end of his 20 year old year of junior to get his ride. You never know who is in the building watching – which is why your intangibles, work ethic, and consistency are so important. Even if you’re not having your best “A” offensive game, which certainly doesn’t happen every game, those can still stand out and make coaches excited about your game. We talked all about it on our latest podcast. Check it out. #hockeypodcast #hockeydevelopment #collegehockeyrecruiting #hockeyrecruiting
I got a text the other day from a great hockey guy asking what we need more of, better of, or different than it has right now. My two off the cuff answers: 1. More parent education 2. More cooperation between youth hockey leaders Bob Mancini was on our HTT Community call a few weeks ago and he said the best places for development have competition on the ice, and cooperation off of it. With how professional youth hockey has become, it’s become competition on the ice, and even more competition off the ice for resources and recruiting talent. That’s raised costs and anxiety levels in our sport big time. We talked all about it on our latest Friday Faceoff episode. #hockeypodcast #youthhockey #hockeyparent #hockeyorganization
If you can break a puck out, you won’t have to play defense. The best way to keep the puck out of your net is to have it. We talked about the importance of being able to break a puck out as a defensemen on our latest short shifts episode. #hockeypodcast #shortshifts #hockeydefense #hockeybreakouts
Jeffrey Lovecchio got his mind blown with our podcast guest PJ Atherton when he asked a question he’s been wondering about since he was seven and saw the original Mighty Ducks movie. “What is a cake eater?” This won’t disappoint. #hockeypodcast #hockeylingo #mightyducks #hockeypod
Even though you can’t “check” until 13, it’s still important to teach it at the youngest ages. We discussed what age kids should be allowed to start checking on today’s Friday Faceoff episode! #hockeypodcast #youthhockey #hockeychecking #hockeyskills
When he was 17, @Canadiens Montréal goalie Jakub Dobeš took a picture of every one of his meals and sent them to Vechs as accountability to start eating better and taking care of his body. This is the level of commitment that gets you closer to your dream. How you do anything is how you do everything, and Dobey’s commitment to his dream led him down a path to reaching the NHL. It’s not an accident, great stuff. #hockeypodcast #mtlcanadiens #jakubdobes #nhlgoalies #hockeynutrition
I’ve talked to so many people in youth hockey about how to change the toxic culture - and it’s tough hearing so many good people saying they can’t do it the way they want (the right way) because everyone else is doing it the other way (the business way) and if they don’t do it that way they’ll lose their club. I’m calling BS. If you are involved in youth hockey, please listen to this clip. And if you are a person of influence wherever you are at, stand tall and don’t cater to the crazy. The only way we’ll see positive change is if people of influence in youth hockey areas, who know better, go against the grain and lead the change. #youthhockey #youthhockeyculture #youthsports #hockeypodcast
“If we have more kids that love the game when they end the game, we have more kids that want to coach.” Such amazing perspective from our podcast guest this week, Derek Stephens. The more that kids are passionate about the game, the more those passionate kids will want to give back after their playing days, and the better our game is going to be. #hockeypodcast #youthhockey #loveforthegame #youthsports

We too often equate becoming a better hockey player at a young age with “We need to always play hockey.” If you talk to youth development experts, that’s just not the case. Yes, playing hockey is obviously a part of it. But so is letting them be kids, playing multiple sports, and doing other things that help to balance them out. And, most of those things cost WAY less than playing hockey. We talked about it on our latest podcast with Derek Stephens. #hockeypodcast #youthsports #playmultiplesports #dynamicathlete
Consistency in preparation is one of the most important attributes of high level players. Not only does it help you be a better player, but it also builds trust in the coaches you play for. We had @Canadiens Montréal goalie Jakub Dobeš on the podcast and it was a huge part of our conversation I think all players should hear. Dobey’s journey: Grew up in Czechia. Came to St. Louis as U18 and played 2 years U18 Started junior in the NAHL Progressed to the USHL 2 years at Ohio State 1 year in the AHL Gets his call up to the NHL midway through his 2nd pro year and shut out the defending Stanley Cup champions in his first game. Everyone has a different path. Most paths are the long way. And if you’re taking the long path, consistency is going to be the thing that helps you to outwork and outlast all of the players you are competing with. #hockeypodcast #jakubdobeš #jakubdobes #mtlcanadiens #nhlgoalies
One of the best things I’ve heard with coaching is to “Catch players doing something right.” Rather than always correcting mistakes, look for when players do something right in practice and reinforce the hell out of that. That recognition of their hard work and improvement can go SUCH A LONG WAY for their confidence and your relationship with them too. Awesome stuff here from Vechs. Next practice, be on the lookout for positive plays and catch them doing something right! #hockeypodcast #hockeycoachingtips #hockeycoaching #positivecoaching

When I started saying “I get to do this” instead of “I have to do this” my life changed. Especially in adversity or the midst of the grind, be grateful for every opportunity that comes your way. #hockeypodcast #hockeypodcasts #adversityinsports #playerdevelopment
Consistency in preparation leads to consistency in play. It was so cool to hear how @Canadiens Montréal goaltender Jakub Dobeš uses visualization to create confidence and hockey sense in his play. Can’t miss episode for all kids. #hockeypodcast #nhlgoalie #goalielife #jakubdobes
“In Edina, it was fun to be hated” We talk so much about how the community model in Minnesota creates opportunities for development far beyond just sharpening skills on the ice. Playing in big games, rivalries, playing for your town and something bigger than yourself… those are moments that are so much fun and also helps kids to develop the skills to play under pressure when the games really mean something. We had PJ Atherton on the podcast this week and we talked everything Minnesota hockey and how it shaped him as a player from getting cut in Bantams to playing for the University of Minnesota. Check it out! 🎙️ #hockeypodcast #minnesotahockey #playingforthelogo #communityhockey
As an elite athlete, so much of being successful is not getting too high on the highs or two low on the lows. We had an awesome conversation with former NHLer Drew Shore on this topic. #hockeypodcast #eliteathletementality #drewshore #nhlplayers
