Meet Hanohano Naehu, aka the Paniolo Prince. He’s a rodeo champion and world record holder in team roping; kiaʻi loko or fishpond steward; environmental activist; and Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner for his Hip-Hop album. “If you mālama ʻāina, you aloha ʻāina, then you can speak for ʻāina. Cuz you know what the ʻāina saying.” Naehu says his mentor, Uncle Walter Ritte, told him that he’s walking the talk doing the fishpond work, and that he should share those stories. Don’t let anyone else tell those stories for him. This instilled a deeper connection to everything he learned as a Hawaiian cowboy. “And I’m thinking to myself, ‘Oh, I wish I could sing. I cannot sing. I cannot play instrument. Oh, I gonna be one rapper.’ … Being one cowboy actually came into play, you know, with becoming one rapper.” Visit our website to learn more about his story. — Home is Here is a local series that takes you deep into neighborhoods across Hawai‘i, providing an inside peek at how we live, work and play.
