achievement unlocked!!!!! i made my very first full ‘ilima lei AHHHHHH SO HAPPY 😁 ‘Ilima lei is one of the most challenging kui style lei i’ve ever made. Challenging in a way that it takes a long time from picking to stringing. The thin flowers are so delicate and will wilt within a few hours if not properly stored. It takes a total of about 600 flowers to complete the full lei single strand. Now days it is hard to find because people don’t normally make due to the amount of time spent to make this lei. I don’t know the exact species of ‘ilima but i call this my “Aunty Honey’s ‘ilima”. My Aunty Honey was famous for her ‘ilima lei. She was the go to ‘ilima lady especially for Hawaiian musicians like Robert Cazimero and more. After she passed, we wanted to bring back what she did, so we were able to get seeds from the family and plant them here in our backyard.
