4 Costco finds for people living with diabetes: More finds from the grocery staple for many! 1. Safe catch tuna - 43g of protein per can, no carbs, no blood sugar impact, and they test each fish for mercury, so heavy metal content is ridiculously low 2. Mini cucumbers - great as a veggie addition to lunch or as a snack, minimal carbs, contain fiber, and taste GOOD 3. Yasso dessert bars - 15g of carbs, 5g of protein for a sweet treat to end the night with and protein to steady the blood sugars! 4. Nuttzo nut butter - no peanuts! But has omega 3s from flax and chia seeds, has some protein, quality fat source, and minimal impact on blood sugars. What did I miss? #diabeteseducation #diabeteslife #typeonediabetes #diabetic #bloodsugarmanagement #insulindependent
What I’d eat at Pizza Hut as a T1D registered dietitian and diabetes educator: Pizza is really tough for a lot of people living with diabetes, but here’s a few options that should be relatively blood sugar friendly. (All slices referenced are large) 1. Hawaiian chicken large hand tossed - 33g net carbs, 15g protein, 8g fat 2. Buffalo chicken - 13g protein, 8g fat, 30g carbs 3. Cheese - 10g fat, 14g protein, 31g carbs Notice most of them are not super high in fat and still have a decent amount of protein. As a side, doing a caesar side salad with chicken and minimal dressing, you're adding in another 28g of protein, veggies, and 17g of fat. I would skip the pasta and anything else that is there - it just doesn’t seem worth it from a nutrition or blood sugar standpoint. Disclaimer: you have to consider dosing for the protein and fat. With enough slides and a side salad, the fat will come back and bite you hours after. I personally dislike pizza (The one person you know that does), but what’s your go to at Pizza Hut? #typeonediabetes #insulindependent #bloodsugarfriendly #t1dlookslikeme #diabeteslife
Breakfast with diabetes does NOT need to be this dramatic While the first meal of the day can absolutely set the tone for your blood sugars for the rest of the day, you have to work with your team to find what’s best and sustainable for you. This person gets a chunk of the information right but is a little too “black and white” with what is the “best”. There’s more than one way to eat as a person living with diabetes. Some people’s bodies do well with some carbs in the morning. And while limiting them might be the answer for many, choosing the right types of carbs for you and having your medication on point is a much more reasonable solution. Also, note the scare tactic on A1c being 5.7. Don’t let people like this freak you out. Make sure you’ve got a great care team you can go to solve your situation. If your care team is not up to par, you might know someone 😉 #diabetestype1 #typeonediabetes #diabeteslife #bloodsugars #diabeteseducation #insulindependent

3-minute blood sugar-friendly lunch recipe for people with diabetes Yes, I’m a dietitian but just because I'm a dietitian does not mean I love cooking 😂 This 3-minute lunch recipe is one of my all-time favorites to keep my blood sugars happy and keep my energy going into the afternoon. It is a low-carb high protein tuna melt wrap. Step 1: Get your container of Safe Catch Tuna and knead the container to absorb all of the liquid. Not only does the liquid provide a great source of omega 3s, but they may also improve cholesterol. SafeCatch tests every fish for mercury to minimize heavy metal exposure which is not good for anyone let alone diabetes. Step 2: Melt some cheese on the low-carb high-fiber tortilla. Step 3: Add your tuna to the tortilla. Step 4: (Optional) Mix tuna with olive oil mayo for taste. My blood sugars barely move when I have this. It tastes phenomenal and you can throw some veggies on the side for a complete lunch. What’s your favorite go-to lunch? #diabetesdiet #type1diabetes #bloodsugarbalance #t1dlookslikeme #insulindependent #diabetestype1
There is NO worse feeling than to… Roll over, look at your dexcom and see that you’re 274 for no explicable reason…. Because now you are: ❌dehydrated AF ❌lacking energy and feeling exhausted ❌potentially nauseous and lightheaded from dehydration ❌in a mental fog And now, you’re supposed to slap a smile on your face and go conquer the world, right?! Instead, you’d rather lay in bed and stare at the ceiling and pray your number comes down quickly… A couple things you can do to expedite that process: 1️⃣DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Start early. Consume a LOT. It’ll not only help your blood sugar return to normal levels in conjunction with the insulin, but also tackle the dehydration….#goodbyeheadache 2️⃣Delay food for a little while, until blood sugars return closer to normal levels. Since you’re already so insulin resistant, food is going to likely spike your BGs higher and higher, which would be the exact opposite of what we want, right? Now that you’re feeling better,, you want to make sure you are amongst the most successful people, who think about where it came from. Was it a meal the night before that kicked in late from fat? Was it dawn phenomenon? Was it a bad site? And then of course, determine strategies to prevent it from happening again! #highbloodsugar #type1diabetes #insulindependent #t1dlookslikeme #diabeteslife

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT🚨⁣ ⁣ You’ve heard of the rule of 15 right?⁣ ⁣ When your blood sugar is low, you take 15g of fast-acting glucose or a carb source.⁣ ⁣ Then, you wait 15 minutes before you re-test and see what your blood sugar is.⁣ ⁣ Problem is? This doesn't work for ALL situations.⁣ ⁣ Why?⁣ ⁣ 15 carbs may not be enough for everyone’s blood sugar⁣ It may be too much for some lows (especially for kids)⁣ Waiting fifteen minutes may not be enough⁣ ⁣ There are plenty of other reasons I could share here.⁣ ⁣ Recognize this: EVERYONE is different and EVERY low blood sugar is different…⁣ ⁣ So, they are all going to be treated a little bit differently.⁣ ⁣ Ultimately you have to figure out what is going to work best for you based on the activity you are doing, based on the severity of your low, based on active insulin, and so many other factors.⁣ ⁣ Make sure you have a plan for your lows #lowbloodsugar #t1dlookslikeme #insulindependent #bloodsugarmanagement #diabeteslife #diabeteseducation

You dont understand diabetes unless you have it - pt 8 I say it all the time, but let’s set the stage for an example of why. You wake up feeling like 💩 since your blood sugar is 205. But you went to bed at 122 so you have no idea why. You're in a rush to get ready for the day and get to your workout. You have to decide if youre going to correct your BG since you're going to train, but then also have concerns about going low - its a new high intensity workout you've never done before. Sometimes, HIIT makes you rise, but if the intensity isn’t there, it could make you drop. You decide on no dose and hope its the right choice. You're dehydrated from waking up AND from the high BG, so you have some water pre-workout for performance. You start drifting to 220 pre-workout - do you take a correction to ensure you dont spike more?  Do you hold steady without one? What about how to handle the basal rate ahead of time? Midway through the workout, look at CGM and 166 - do you stop and get some extra snacks?  Can you make it through? Is the majority of the drop done? All while trying to be present and perform at your best. Post workout - your adrenaline is coming down and starts to plummet - you have to consider adjusting your mealtime dose and what to have afterwards to avoid a low by the time youre home to eat. This is just scratching the surface of what it can feel like, trying to be present all the time but also managing a condition that takes up seemingly half of our brain.  So when I say you don’t get it unless you have it, I”m not exaggerating. #t1dlookslikeme #diabeteslife #diabetestype1 #diabetesproblems #insulindependent

If you're new here, let me reintroduce myself: You might be wondering “who is this guy who talks about diabetes all day and drops all this knowledge?” My name is Ben and I’m a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and strength and conditioning coach.  I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 7. Growing up with diabetes all I got from my care team was a lot of “No” and a lack of answers:
💀No, you can’t have the cupcake with your friends. 💀No, you can’t play sports. 💀No, you can’t get strong.

And it really bothered me. I wanted answers and none of them existed. So, I decided to dedicate my life to help fill that void so no one with diabetes would have to go through what I went through as a kid or as an adult as well. Ultimately, I’ve developed a dietetics and diabetes education practice where we specialize in helping people with diabetes have amazing blood sugars while eating amazing food while becoming the best version of themselves. Because there’s more to life than diabetes, I’ve got a beautiful wife Amelia, a diabetes alert doggo that we trained ourselves named, Roscoe P, love to travel, and go to sporting events, workout, and eat lots of crazy awesome food. I’m just here to make your diabetes a little bit better every single day and do my best to increase as much access as possible, to the point where we even take insurance if you are serious about improving your blood sugars. Tell me something fun about you! #typeonediabetes #t1dlookslikeme #diabetesdietitian #insulindependent #bloodsugarmanagement

Want in-range blood sugars this Super Bowl Sunday? do this Super Bowl Sunday can be filled with a lot of snacks, delicious food, and potentially a great football game (not so much this year but you never know) However, these snacks can lead to high blood sugars if you are not careful, which can ruin the social gathering that you are attending. Here’s my 3 simple things to do to stay in range: 1. Get in a workout. This will boost your insulin sensitivity so you have a little more wiggle room for all of the snacks and ideally set you up with a great blood sugar going in. 2. Measure your portion sizes. This is one of the easiest things to not do at any type of social event. But if you are not assessing your food so you can properly adjust your medication for it, whether that is insulin or something else, you’re doing yourself a major disservice. 3. Don’t graze. Grazing is super simple and we often do it without thinking about it. You walk into the kitchen, you grab three chips, you grab a cookie, and before you know it your blood sugar is skyrocketing because you completely forgot to dose.  Stay present but also stay present when it comes to food. Your blood sugars and your body will thank you.  Which of these are you going to try? #superbowlsunday #type1diabetes #insulindependent #bloodsugarmanagement #diabeteseducation
If you were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the last six months… …there’s time for you to potentially turn around your diabetes (!!) As you probably know, the immune system of people with T1D attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. But what you probably DON'T know is GAD65 is an enzyme that gets caught in the mess and is also destroyed. Diamyd has a new research trial testing a therapy to tell the immune system to chill and NOT attack GAD65 (we like GAD65- he’s our pal) …Which could mean your body calls a truce and stops the attack on the pancreas. This could prolong the honeymoon stage of a newly diagnosed person with T1D, since they've still got insulin producing cells left. This therapy is for people with T1D who carry a specific gene, and about 40% of people with T1D have it! Diamyd is recruiting in a dozen locations across the US and in several European countries, so if you fit the criteria, visit diagnode-3.com to learn more. #diabetestype1 #t1dlookslikeme #insulindependent #typeonediabetes #diabetesawareness
