ask me how I know… 😏 adults are quick to ooo and aaah over a cute baby with a disability for accomplishing milestones, being adorable, and overcoming obstacles. and AS WE SHOULD. 👏🏼 but. those sweet babies grow up. they grow into teenagers — their smushy baby features, faded. we might assume they should be better at blending in or knowing how to act, but we extend a little more grace because they are still learning. then those teenagers turn into adults. they are no longer“cute” and they don’t get to use “still learning” as a pass. but their worth didn’t change. yet, society is far more apathetic to respecting and celebrating the lives of those adults who are disabled, because at this point in their lives, they “should know better.” these disabled adults aren’t being swooned over, since they are now equals to us in age. we don’t know how to act around “them,” so we look at them one of two ways, typically: offering a soft smile to share that we know they are different, we are sorry they are different, and we wish them well on their way, OR by determining that they shouldn’t be there with us — in the grocery store, in the workplace, in higher educational settings, in our churches. we joke that our friends are “mentally challenged” when something is hard for them; we unfairly blame things on the intellectually disabled, because they likely won’t argue in defense of themselves; we laugh at or scorn adults who stim in public, especially those who don’t “look” disabled; we regularly hear words in movies and shows that reiterate the idea that if someone isn’t traditionally smart, then they must be bad. adults with disabilities are, simply put, not treated well in society. and it grieves me for my adult brother and my almost teenage son. my challenge to you — when you see a child or baby who you are eager to praise and adore, remember that child will grow up someday in a world where very few keep that same energy toward them. when you see an adult with an intellectual disability, remember that they were once a child, and they remain as worthy of your respect and love today as much as they did back then. #intellectualdisability #kindness #bullying #discrimination #adulthood #raisingkids #wordsmatter #disabilitytiktok #parenting #downsyndrome #stimming
